I was never much into this movie myself, but my brother was obsessed with it and since he was older and therefore had control of the VCR in the summer and on weekends I've seen it many many many times. And we had to listen to the soundtrack in the car on every single vacation we went on in the late 80s-early 90s. I kinda want to see it in the theater just to see what it looks like in a format other than a worn out VHS tape.

Just watched it. Won't do it again. That is all.

As crazy as this seems, this movie was a huge recruitment tool back in the day. I went to work supporting the Navy in the early 90s and the Navy brass was still bragging about how many rubes joined the Navy after seeing this movie thinking how they would be playing volleyball, flying jets, and sleeping with sexy instructors.

Oh, I don't think it sounds crazy at all. They do paint a glamorous picture of military pilots, in spite of the fatal crash.

That is true, but the vast majority of people who joined the Navy are not pilots though. I was thinking of some poor mug joining thinking of paradise, but he would end up painting the numerous hallways of some oiler ship out in the Mediterranean like a buddy of mine did.

I just caught it on Netflix instant. Ah, the good old days, when Cruise didn't try to make himself look significantly taller than he really was (well, except around McGillis).
That sex scene was so awesomely bad (but alas, too brief). I'm convinced an entire generation learned how to tongue-kiss from CTC.

"I feel the need. The need for speed!" That soundtrack may have been the original guideline for "hit song" soundtracks in the future. It was on the radio forever.

Even pilots don't have the glamour depicted in this movie. The former Mr. Azalea was a Navy pilot for 10 years, during 7 of which we were married. Most of it was dull. When we met he was a flight instructor for rank beginners and hated it. And don't get me started on the irregularities in this movie. I don't think anyone did any research.

What WAS that? It looked like a commercial. It's so awkward.
