One thing I wondered about was the conspiracy theory that Top Gun was actually financed by the DOD or the Navy or other entity specifically to boost recruitment. I can't find a link, and I have no idea if it was worthwhile or conceptually successful, or even necessary, but it's one of many random internet garbage asteroids I can't unread, you know?

I can see it. If you can peel your eyes long enough from the man-meat, you can see a recruitment poster ("Navy. It's not just a job, it's an adventure.") in the locker room. Why would there be a recruitment poster when everyone in that locker room is already in the Navy? I'm loving this fan-made trailer.

chonies, I read an article on Salon in the last couple of years on that subject. From what I recall, the Pentagon, DOD, or whoever were heavily involved in several movies in the 80's that glorified militarism and general "Yay, Team America" type sentiment. The other film that was called out was Red Dawn. Top Gun was seen as the ultimate success story because of its popularity and the fact that the Navy did see an increase in recruitment after its release
