Is there seriously no thread for this? (I searched!)
When I was in junior high, Showtime seemed to show the same movies on rotation constantly - Ferris Bueller, Can't Buy Me Love, Adventures in Babysitting, Summer School and Top Gun, and damn if I didn't watch them all over and over and even memorize them. Mr. carrier76 jokingly put a link on my Facebook about the new 3D re-release of Top Gun, and after watching the trailer, I kind of want to see it? I unabashedly love this piece of cheese, but it might also be embarrassing.
Also, I won't be able to stop thinking about Tiny sitting around watching videos of himself as Maverick repeatedly. Hee.

I am embarrassed* to say that I totally loved it when I saw it--5th grade? maybe. Of course, I wanted to be a fighter pilot and blow fake things up. BOOM! And, in all honesty, I only saw this movie once. It was a brief but intense phase.
I also love the idea of TC watching himself as Maverick.
*but that won't stop me!

I was living in Norfolk, VA when this movie came out. Both my parents worked for the USN, my dad was a Navy vet, so this movie was a big deal. I remember going to see it with my mom and I had a poster of Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis on my wall. I still think all Navy stuff is cool, F-18s, aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, whatever. When I see it I'm all "America, F*** YEAH!"

I have never really thought that Kelly McGillis was that pretty as the romantic lead. ?
You gotta love Goose.

I have never really thought that Kelly McGillis was that pretty as the romantic lead. ? You gotta love Goose. I always thought she was mismatched--I like her kind of handsome beauty, but it's kind of, well, literary compared to Tom Cruise and all his other romantic leads. A few years after Top Gun she was in my city doing Shakespeare, and I thought that was probably a better fit.

On one hand, I want to go, despite it being in 3D (I really hate 3D), but on the other hand, it's $15.50, yo. We already own it on DVD, so I think I may just force mr. carrier76 to watch it tonight with the surround sound turned up.

carrier, we must be around the same age, because I remember memorizing those movies too. (Also, "Troop Beverly Hills") I was at a corporate event a few years ago and the motivational speaker was a former fighter pilot who was an extra in Top Gun - it was very cool to hear a little about the prep and precision that goes into a day in the life of a fighter jet pilot.
I may need to see this in IMAX but at the same time, $15 is a lot of money for something I can easily watch at home (and is played on TNT/TBS every other weekend...)

WestEndGirl, yes, that too! And "She's Out of Control".
I think I would be really excited to go, and then sit there and laugh the whole time (especially at the volleyball scene) and feel kind of dumb that we spent $31 to see a movie that, like you said, we could easily watch at home.
I'm just going to go ahead and say that Tiny is pretty hot in this movie, though.
