I didn't think this would make big box office.. I guess Benedict can take solace in having his performance lauded and focusing on all the other movies he has coming out. The whole wikileaks thing doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would set the box office on fire here in the US. Not enough people care enough about it to pay to see a movie about it. And yeah, Cumberbatch is still too much of a cult celeb in the US to put butts in the seats on his own. But his career won't die because of this. He may not ever be a leading man, but he's totally a character actor anyway. He's more Gary Oldman than George Clooney.

I didn't think this would make big box office either. Julian Assange's moment in the sun has passed. He no longer holds people's attention as he did a couple of years ago. It probably hasn't been helped by several former Wikileaks staffers saying that Julian has turned into a clone of the people and organisations he agitated against. The problem with making a 'topical' movie is that often by the time it's made the world has moved on.
Edward Snowden has taken the world's attention away from Julian.
Gary Oldman is a perfect comparison.

If Tumblr had been around when Gary was young, he'd have been worshipped on there. What would his fans called themselves? Now let's see if it takes Cumberbatch as long as it took Oldman to get his first Oscar nom. I don't think he has a chance this awards season...

My chief annoyance is the "Assange got his way!" spin on the movie's failure. I'm sure there are some who've stayed away out of principle, but there are also many more like me who just aren't here for Assange at all. I'd rather watch a Chelsea Manning movie.

I saw the movie, and for me what made it good but not great was that it didn't seem to focus on the most interesting parts of WikiLeaks-I'd watch a whole movie about Chelsea Manning or what they helped do in Iceland, but the movie was instead about the Daniel/Julian relationship-and Daniel was out of WL as they were releasing the Afgan War Logs, so that's where it ended. IF the movie had started with the Iceland thing and gone through the rape charges and ended with Assange living at the embassy, it would have been more interesting. Cumberbatch was really good though, he managed to be charming and creepy and unlikable in various shades, all of which Assange is.

I generally enjoy BC in what he does, and think he can be attractive in a quirky way, although never found him "sexy" per se. However, I did see the latest Star Trek finally last night and I will say that he did a surprisingly good job as an evil action villain, with moments of sexy. I was actually impressed that he could do a role like that, since I'm used to seeing him as the more uptight/reserved kind of role.
That said, dark hair suits him better than blond/white.

I'm not sure why anyone thought this would make a good movie. The whole story was all over the news/internet, who needs to see it on film? Kind of like the Steve Jobs film, we all knew his story.

He looks super-creepy as Julian Assange. I find it hard to believe anyone would rout for him in that movie as a hero.

Despite the glitch of the film, I have no doubt his career will continue to grow as it is. Gary Oldman is a really good comparison, and BC has a far more character actor face than Oldman ever had, but both have the same reputation as being very good actors. So, even if BC never headlines a movie again, he'd still have steady work.
As a platinum blonde he's quite creepy, who would want to rush to see that?

It's been covered up thread, but I'll add my 2-cents. TFE --to me-- is a specialty film. Dreamworks never should have put it in wide release. Their marketing group tried to capitalize on BC's growing fame and it bit them in the ass. The film has a narrow appeal, and although I think Benedict's popularity will grow due to his immense talent, it isn't there yet.
I agree that the film as a whole was meh, but BC's performance was incredibly solid. I hope he got out of the experience what he wanted, and this isn't seen as a setback.
I would have preferred if the film started in Iceland and continued through to the embassy, instead of focusing on the Julian/Daniel relationship as well.
