Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch (born 19 July 1976) is an English actor. His most acclaimed roles include Stephen Hawking in the BBC drama Hawking (2004); William Pitt in the historical film Amazing Grace (2006); protagonist Stephen Ezard in the miniseries thriller The Last Enemy (2008); Paul Marshall in Atonement (2007); Bernard in Small Island (2009); and Sherlock Holmes in the modern BBC adaptation series Sherlock (2010).

In February 2011, he began playing both Victor Frankenstein and his creature opposite Jonny Lee Miller in Danny Boyle's stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The play had a three-month run at the Royal National Theatre. In late 2011, he played Major Stewart in Steven Spielberg's War Horse (2011). He also played Peter Guillam, one of the pivotal roles in Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011).

He reprised the role of Sherlock Holmes in the second series of the BBC's Sherlock, which aired in the United Kingdom in January 2012 and was broadcast on PBS in the United States in May 2012. He also stars as Christopher Tietjens in the BBC/HBO co-production television miniseries Parade's End, which first aired August 2012. He portrayed Smaug the Dragon through voice and motion capture and also provided the motion capture for the Necromancer in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit (2012). He will also portray the main antagonist, John Harrison, in J. J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness, which is scheduled to be released in May 2013, and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate, scheduled for release in November 2013.

I don't think I've actually ever watched him act or be interviewed. I only know about him because ONTD is always calling him out for being something of a whiner, his fangirls are a little...intense, and everyone else side-eyes them for treating him like he's teh sex. I suppose I could Youtube clips of Sherlock but I really don't care that much. I guess I'll see him in the next Star Trek in a few months.

Sherlock is really worth watching. He is compelling and it's the only time in his life where he's not really, really ugly. Also, his voice is fantastic.

I enjoy him on Sherlock, but I do not get his crazy fandom at all. He has an interesting face, but I don't know if I'd call him attractive and definitely not sexy.

I liked his character in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

I like him as an actor but I wish that both his stans and his anti-stans would take a hike. Both fractions are supremely irritating and you basically can't read anything about him on the net without encountering them. Perhaps some sort of death-match is in order...

He's excellent in everything. I don't think his looks would be criticized if it weren't for those awful Sherlock fangirls. He looks his best, imo with his hair grown out to the Sherlock curls length but with his natural color. Apparently he hates his Sherlock hair but I think it's a big improvement. He does whine about British press but he isn't particularly offensive so I've never gotten why he's been called out so much by ONTD (and his co-star Martin Freeman has gotten a pass for proudly being a dickhead ).

I think Benedict is cute, but I have strange tastes. He was named #4 on a 'weird crushes' poll in the UK, but that poll was BS cause Alan Rickman was #9, and there is nothing weird about loving Alan Rickman.

The fan girls are a real turn off to me though, although Benedict got points for saying that he didn't like the term "Cumberbitches" and thought "Cumberbabes" was better.

I agree so much. Every time I've seen him discussed, it devolves into a "he's the most beautiful/he's the ugliest" fight.

I like him a lot as an actor. I also think he loves playing complicated or twisted characters, and I'm really looking forward to the next Star Trek film.

He's very good in Sherlock but I am alarmed at what appears to be his bloodless pallor. Extremely pale people freak me out!

God, sing it. The people who hate him are just as awful as the fangirls, if not more so since they are burning so much energy primarily because they don't like the fact that other people like him so much rather than Cumberbatch himself.

I like him and I think he's a very talented actor. I've never gotten the furor over his "whining" because I've never seen anything he said as all that terrible and it's generally based in truth (the British press IS brutish, and the second season of Downton Abbey really wasn't the best). His primary problem seems to be the lack of a good PR filter.

As for his looks, it's kind of a strange thing for me - at some angles I think he borders on beautiful in a strange way (like I do with Tilda Swinton), but from other angles he is a bit odd-looking. I've read from a couple sources (the Fug Girls being one) that he's quite good looking in person.

Does anyone know when Parade's End is coming to HBO? Is it this weekend?
