I think his looks would have been criticized regardless. Maybe a bit less than what's currently going on, though. And the same people on ONTD bitching about Benedict also bitch about Martin Freeman.

My favorite description of Benedict is that he looks "like the middle stage of an Animorphs cover."

He's not conventionally attractive. Internet culture being what it is, comments would have been vicious about his looks as he got more famous no matter what. Perhaps the feverpitch atmosphere among über-fans and über-antis made it worse in his case. But for all the moaning there is about the "shallow film industry" in those same internet corners, many people are really guided by those norms and judge every celebrity accordingly. He can be striking in the right role so his looks have served him well to a certain degree and I'm sure he knows that he's not really Hollywood heartthrob material.

As for that cesspool of misogyny and racism that is ONTD, they seem to live in some sort of Twilight Zone that's only vaguely related to actual reality anyway, at least that's how it seems when I dare go into one of the posts from time to time there...

I don't know anything about the whole fan girl anti fan things, but I do know that the guy can act.

Aside from Sherlock, his best performances imo, are Hawking, Tinker Tailor and the submlimely beautiful Stuart: A Life Backwards. A drama based on the biography of by Alexander Masters (played by Cumberbach) of the story of his friend, Stuart Shorter (played by Tom Hardy). The drama tells Stuart's troubled life story and whilst it does make me cry, I would really reccommend seeing it.

While ONTD can have its moments, I think they're actually a lot better at calling out misogyny and racism than a lot of other places. There are certain trolls that abound since ONTD's a large site, but that's to be expected. If I'm to be perfectly honest, I've raised my eyebrows more at stuff that's given a pass here. (And I like this site too, for the record, I don't think either one is bad.) ONTD is no IMDB or reddit or fark.

I just hope that Benedict isn't playing Khan in the new Star Trek movie. Please tell me that the EW cover was a mistake.

Seconded. A hard role - had to walk a fine line to avoid making that character a textbook pedophile. I thought he did it brilliantly.

He was also completely amazing in Danny Boyle's Frankenstein. I saw him do both roles and while I like Jonny Lee Miller plenty I thought BC trumped him as both the Dr. and the Creature.

Ha! That is the best description ever. My previous favorite was the description of him as a hammerhead shark, so maybe that's his Animorph form.

One of the reasons I'm not too fond of him is that he's whined a bit about being too posh for certain roles. It falls just under "I'm too beautiful to be taken seriously as an actor" on the list of things you could say to make everyone hate you.
