I haven't read the book, but I really, really enjoyed the movie. I went in being a little swayed by critics harping about the production holdups, money issues, etc. but whatever they stopped production on to fix, worked for me.
And yay, James Badge Dale! Now that I've seen him outside of 24, I can tell just how well he can act, given the room & opportunity. He had a cameo (sort of) in The Lone Ranger too; he was almost unrecognizable but great.

Now that I have seen it and read the synopsis of the original ending I hope they include it in the DVD release. I would like to see more zombie killing.

I haven't seen the movie, but there are some specific characters form the books I hope made it into the movie...
Specifially the asian computer hacker who emerges from his bedroom to find everyone gone and his building full of zombies, who makes his way on the outside of the building using sheets as ropes, and makes his way to the country where he finds the blind Yoda guy kicking zombie ass and using a shovel to do it. Then becomes a Zombie Killer Expert. Is he in the movie?
Did they use the interview-style used in the book to tell the story of many different people and the ways they were affected by the war? It worked for Interview With A Vampire, I don't see why it wouldn't work well here.

There's little shout-outs to the book here and there but none of the characters from it are in the movie.

Aw, Bummer then. I won't go out of my way to watch a movie that only uses a good book's title and ignores everything else. I'll catch it on HBO some weekend someday.

It wasn't a terrible way to spend two hours, but I can't believe they spent so much money on it. The special effects were marginal and their lead actor was phoning it in.
28 Days Later remains my all-time favorite zombie flick.

I own it but will still watch it if it pops up on cable somewhere... I always pretend I'm seeing it for the first time. I remember seeing it in a theater; as the credits rolled people were slow to get up and there were a lot of "Holy shit" and "WTF"s being mumbled. And I'm forever grateful to Danny Boyle for introducing me to Naomie Harris and Cillian Murphy (those eyes!).

I finally got around to watching this as part of my post-Christmas couch fest. I didn't mind it. It was nothing like the book, but there was no way they could turn that book into a movie. And they did seem to include some of the back stories in the exposition from the Mossad guy and the CIA guy.
Although, I didn't think the North Koreans pulled everyone's teeth out, I thought the whole country just went completely black and no-one knew what happened to them- I found that really creepy!
Also, I didn't like the idea of fast moving zombies even though I thought they looked super creepy. I watched one of the DVD extras where they interviewed the biologist or insectologist or someone who they said the zombies were sort of based on swarming insect colonies and the behaviour of zombie ants.

Finally saw this on Netflix. Meh, while I love end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it movies, zombies are just silly to me.
Brad Pitt is just too Brad Pitt for me, I can't unsee the celebrity when he acts. He's become too much of a tabloid icon for me to accept him as a scientist or whatever. I just see him in a movie and think, "Hey, now Brad Pitt is going to get attacked."
Plus, his character was just a big ol' jinx. Wherever he went, trouble followed. Israel was doing fine until he showed up. Yes, I know he didn't cause the breach of the wall, but his jinxy presence probably did. And sure, now millions of Israelis will fall victim, but as long as he is escorted to safety on that plane, that's all that matters.
Didn't like that his wife just had to sit around, hug her kids and look distraught - I guess she wasn't a big enough name to warrant any more. I was picturing Jessica Chastain or Julianne Moore in the role.
So while it was an entertaining bit of fluff, I'm glad I didn't pay theatre prices for it.
