I saw this tonight and I loved it! It's definitely not something you would classify as a "smart" comedy but it was lots of fun. Bullock and McCarthy really brought it and you could sense that they thoroughly enjoyed every moment of filming. I just wish there was a little more Jane Curtain.
Yes, I was quite relieved that they didn't go in that direction. MM was perfect but it was also a role that could have been played by an actress of a different size, ethnicity, etc. I can't really say the same for "Identity Thief", for instance.

Late to the game, but I finally got to see this last week. I loved it! The previews I had seen made it seem like the dumbest movie ever- but it turned out they mainly took from the bar scene which was not all that relevant to the plot (just bonding/ character growth) So it was the reverse where all the best parts hadn't been spoiled by the previews.
But anyway, it was deeply entertaining. I loved that it was treated like a buddy comedy regardless of gender. They didn't play it like they had to prove themselves as women in a man's world- they were already in the world and ruled it, it's just their personalities rubbed their co workers the wrong way- not the fact that they were women. It seems they took all the gender bashing that could have happened and gave it to the albino, who got plenty of pot shots taken right back at him. I also loved that they only had one scene where they had to use their sexuality to get the job done- and that was as much about making Sandra Bullock look less like such an obvious FBI agent as it was about making her appealing to the bad guy she was trying to get close to. So all that was refreshing. Plus, it was just a damn funny comedy.
They already have an entry for The Heat 2 on imdb. Hopefully if they do make it it'll be just as good. And hopefully Marlon Wayans will be back so they can decide if there is something there between him and Sandra Bullock's character (will extreme annoyance turn to romance???) However, having said that, I rather like that they didn't end it with either character having to find love. They had a job to do and they did it. They weren't lonely girls waiting for a man to complete them. They both had the potential for romance- but it wasn't the highest priority. Also refreshing.

I read that neither actress is interested in a sequel.

It's probably better that way, but I would still watch one. And I want them to do another movie together anyway, cops or not.

I thought they both agreed to the sequel before this movie was even released. That's what I read anyway.

I read that Sandra said she'd have to see a script before agreeing to a sequel which is smart. Too many times they crank out a crappy sequel just to make money. Given the low budget of this movie and the fact that both leads were female I don't think the studio had any inkling it would be a success so I think the sequel talk has only happened post-release.

This is what I read. And I inferred that it would have to be a really, really good script. It's OK not to do sequels for everything that hits the screens (see: The Hangover, The Matrix, The Expendables etc.).

I think the Miss Congeniality sequel was the lesson learned.
