Like someone said; Beyonce will come out the winner in all this.

As an aside to chiqui's post: How soon before there's a Cliff Notes for the Fifty Shades trilogy? As for the trailer, best laugh I had all week! This is going to turn into a cheeze-fest like "Showgirls". Based on the wickedly awful trailer, there's no chance it'll be a legitimate hit like 'Basic Instinct'. 50SoG can only hope for the cult of status of 'Showgirls' or '9 1/2 Weeks'. I'm thinking it'll end up like 'Exit to Eden'-- so terrible it's not even worth snarking on. Oh, I'm sure we will all find plenty to snark on.

Hey, I like to snark on Exit to Eden! It has some scenes that always make me laugh.

What I want to know is: Does Dakota bring her parents to this premiere? I mean, how awkward would that be? What would the after party conversation be like? "Hey mom and dad, did you like all of my S&M scenes?" Do her half brothers come? Childhood friends? I just don't think I'd know where to look! Don Johnson was on the Graham Norton show recently. The topic of his daughter being in this movie did come up, and he framed it as, "We told our children that if they want to live at home they need to either be in school or working. So Dakota went out and got a job. Works for us." Then, comedian John Bishop, who was also on the panel joked that he has a 28 year old son who is a perpetual student, and who will never move out because of this. Don jokingly acknowledged that this can be a problem. I don't know what he was supposed to say about his daughter being in this movie, but he handled the topic calmly and well. If he isn't thrilled about it or thinks it will turn out to be a poor career move he isn't saying so, and he came off as supportive of Dakota. OT referring to Miami Vice, John Bishop told him "Your the reason I looked like a dick for all those years, and living in Manchester [going sockless as the Miami Vice did] my ankles were freezing. And I looked like a dick." or words to that effect.

When the promotional tour kicks into gear that will be entertaining in and of itself. Dakota and Jamie Dornan were awkward in the Today show interview because they were bombarded with questions about kinky sex, and that's all anyone will ask them about. One interview after another all over the world with adults engaging in middle-school teasing and giggling.

My problem with the books is that there is plenty of well written erotica out there so why bother with this garbage (and I'm insulting the quality of the writing, not the subject matter). I wonder how many people who enjoyed the books went out and investigated better quality erotic fiction.
And how many times is Beyonce going to recycle Crazy in Love? That song is the musical equivalent of the energizer bunny - just keeps going.

I actually think this will turn out well for Dakota and Jamie. Two weeks ago, I would have said that the "50 shades" ship has sailed, and that ths movie is two years too late, but I think the reception of the trailer is proving me wrong.
I hated the books (well, I loved reading them - but only because my best friend and I read them together on holiday while making fun of them. I would never have finished them on my own.) and thought they were a piece of crap. But I will see the movie, with my friends and some booze, and I think a lot of people will do the same.
I think this will be less Showgirls, and more Sex and the City the movie. Will it be a classic? No. But a lot of people will go. As long as they both stay clear of sequels, I think Jamie and Dakota will do fine, and this will put them on the map.
So well played, PR team - well played.
(obviously, based on the trailer, and ymmv)

And it's basically the same way I felt about the Twilight books/movies (although I actually do think the Twilight books were much more engaging and well-written, which isn't saying much!). My friends and I went to a local theater that serves wine for all of those movies and had a great time snarking (quietly) to each other and giggling all through the films. I plan to do the same with 50 Shades.

Both Melanie and Don have been in crappy movies full of lame sex scenes. Neither of them are master thespians. Dakota took this role to get her name out there. She's trying to build a career. From a family perspective, she should not feel weird about doing this movie. Her performance will be on par or better than most of the crappy movies her parents have done.
I think this will get the leads noticed, but outside the rabid fan base I don't think this film will have much appeal. The trailer doesn't make me want to see it.
