Mr. 76 and I rented this last night, mostly for the laffs and the facepalms, of which there were PLENTY ("Are you going to make love to me now?" "What's a butt plug?"). Somewhere along the line I got offended as a woman, not because of his need to control and all of that (though I did keep shouting "OH MY GOD, HE'S A STALKER; RUN!"), but because, like stupid Twilight, the heroine of the story is like, "OMG I'm totally okay with your stalking and whatever you want because you're totes cute!" I mean, I guess Johnson gave Ana more life than Kristen Stewart ever gave to Bella (faint praise) and I guess she was supposed to have more spunk and such because she kept challenging his "rules" and so on, but still, URGH. Someone makes you sign a non-disclosure agreement? Nope. Someone presents you with a sex contract? NOPE. You say, "This is weird, bye bye now." God. OR you go all in. You're like, let's do this, and stop dillying around. What made her so compelling to him anyway? She was just kind of there.
By the end of the movie, I was honestly more annoyed with her than him. He was for sure sending mixed messages, but her cutesy-ness and constant, "WHY CAN'T WE SLEEP IN THE SAME BED?!?!111" was grating. And maybe someone could explain this to me, but her getting so outraged at the end, AFTER SHE TOLD HIM TO GIVE HER THE WORST, and after he asked, "Are you sure?" made no sense to me. I just didn't get it. She knew what he was straight out of the gate. And he kept telling her that. And then he did what she requested. And that was the breaking point? Maybe I'm not looking at it right and someone could help me out, but I seriously was like, "Honey, what are you complaining about?"
Though, a guy who "doesn't do relationships" wouldn't have her meeting his family and calling her his girlfriend. That made no effing sense either. UGH.
