It makes perfect sense. There are a lot of books that I loved while I hated the movie version. Somewhere among the porn and the cat videos, the internet is full of people who complain about how a film or TV version is a terrible adaptation of a book. "Game of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead" are but two that readily come to mind (both are excellent shows but the purists are numerous and LOUD.)

But what's funny in this case is that the books are absolute drivel. And all of the stuff that most people seem to be finding terrible/objectionable in the movie is just as prevalent if not more so in the book(s). That's what makes no sense to me.

I'm sorry madefortv. I was kind of thinking out loud about the particular scenario you described. Sometimes I get carried away with the armchair psychology. If I casually brought up someone in my life only to have them faux-analyzed as if they were a celebrity to snark on, I'd be annoyed too.

Actually, I like the critical thinking and analyzing of this movie (and the books too).
I do understand why the books and movie were/are successful. It's about the grass is greener. I mean if you're a person, a woman, a single mother who has to get up early in the morning to get the children ready for school, drives them to school, or takes the subway, then has to commute to work, then works at a thankless job that pays the bills and the health insurance (if you're lucky); then has to bring the children home, cook dinner, get the kids to bed and do this day in and day out; I can see how this movie, or these books might be appealing.

Probably because even though the book is drivel, the people who read it used their own imaginations to visualize the scenes. Now that those scenes are in a visual format and the product of someone else's imagination, the book readers are going, "That's not as good as how I imagined it." And, as noted upthread, seeing some of the more violent elements is more shocking and repulsive for some than just reading about it.

Well, I saw the movie last night with a girlfriend. Full disclosure, I only read the first book, my girlfriend read all 3. I went into the movie with the full intention of just laughing at the movie and laugh I did. Unlike in the book, the movie version of Ana and Christian have no chemistry whatsoever. Dakota Johnson does a better job of pulling off her character, but just like in the book, I never quite understand what draws Christian to her (which was my same complaint about Twilight and Bella).
My favorite part about this movie? The soundtrack! I downloaded it last night when I got home, it was the only way I could get Annie Lennox's version of "I Put a Spell on You," but honestly, the soundtrack is great.

I thought Twilight's soundtrack was great. I can't figure out how movies this bad have such kicking music.

Because even though the movie is bad, if it's popular that means a lot of people will see it, more people will download the music and that means more $$$ for everybody involved.

My sister went to see it with her BF. She fell asleep. Seems like a reasonable defense mechanism.
