Our house in Huntington Beach was built in 1967 as a model house for the tract, so the developer tried out some things that didn't go into the other houses. When we bought it in 1996, we knew about the bright yellow formica countertops (it looked exactly like the Brady Bunch kitchen with the dark wood cabinets except the counters were bright yellow rather than bright orange.) We didn't know why the previous owners had put carpet in the kitchen (it was that thin industrial carpet, not pile) until we pulled it up and found that the floor was the same shade of yellow ceramic tile, laid in a herringbone pattern. It would have been gorgeous, if it hadn't been yellow.
We did remodel that kitchen, and replaced the yellow tile with a wood-look laminate, and the yellow formica with a more neutral shade formica.

The red bathroom makes me a little nervous but the rest of it is kind of fabulous! I miss the ‘70s...I can’t believe it but I do. Except Nixon.

I am totally in love with that purple bedroom and bathroom. I had a huge area rug in that exact purple made for my loft. I have an unhealthy love of purple shag.

I think the issue is not so much the individual elements, it's the combination. One person likes the shag carpet, another likes the purple toilet, another likes the wallpaper - and designers are using stuff like that now in their designs. The difference is that it's one thing, like wild colourful wallpaper on one wall that is otherwise mostly neutral.
Throwing it all in one room is too damn much.

New show alert: Celebrity IOU, where a celeb enlists the Property Brothers to do a reno for someone in their life. The first episode was Brad Pitt doing his long-time makeup artist's little guest house (more like an oversized room). It was pretty good, and to be totally shallow, holy lord, Brad looks hot as hell.

Aw, man! I wanted to watch this I completely forgot to look for it. But I’m hoping that like every other show, HGTV will air it again and again and again so I can catch it.

Do any of you watch Bargain Mansions? I started watching because my husband grew up in Kansas City and I have always been fascinated by the large homes near Country Club Plaza, but haven't been in any of them. The third season started about a month ago.
However this season is annoying because the host, Tamara Day, is trying to open her own design studio. She says her design aesthetic is "glam and cozy" but it feels more like she just throws tons of stuff out there and nothing in her homes seems to work correctly.
The latest episode particularly irked me, a 4400 square foot house on 3.5 acres 30 miles outside downtown Kansas City. That square footage must include a full basement (not shown) because the first and second floor did not seem particularly spacious. The first floor originally had foyer/living room/dining room/kitchen/bathroom/mudroom. She said nobody uses formal dining rooms anymore (okay) and closed it off as a large home office. She did not transform anything into open concept (I actually approve of this).
Her new large kitchen has a huge island with seating, a banquette in the bay window, and a butler's pantry. The original, separate living room just got a cosmetic overhaul. Okay, fine, but if you are paying $700,000 (what she listed at) for a huge house like that, don't you expect somewhere to put your dining room table? At Thanksgiving do you set the island up with your fancy china?

I think I'd like more decorating shows that don't involve major demolition, or rely on finding really amazing things at flea markets. I don't even care if they're sponsored by Crate and Barrel or West Elm or whatever, that could make it more interesting in a way.
There's a British series called the Great Interior Design Challenge that would be much better to translate to the US than another reboot of Trading Spaces, but I suppose with All This, anything new will have to wait.

My favorite things are 1) when they knock out kitchen walls to create an open floor plan, thereby typically getting rid of a bunch of cabinets and storage space as well as putting the food prep area on display for all and sundry. (I would despise having dinner guests being able to see all the mess when we sit down to eat.); 2) when they take out the coat closet by the front door to create some kind of fancier entry area.
