Reminds me of how Michele Bachmann, the FEMALE U.S. SENATOR, said in the Senate hall yesterday that she opposes a women's history museum in D.C. because it will celebrate feminism, and god knows ALL feminists have ever done is promote abortion (paraphrasing here). Again, female. In the Senate. But feminism has nothing to do with that. Nope, nothing at all.

On the other hand, feeling smug here. Because I really, really didn't like her public persona OR her acting (words cannot describe how much she sucked in The Descendants). So now I'm feeling sort of vindicated.

The feminism question. Every time a starlet answers it, Taylor Swift being the most recent example I can think of, they screw it up. I get why reporters ask them - it's a chance for an unscripted moment and if you're really lucky, what they'll say is so stupid it will get attention.

And the problem is bigger than any of them. They all support women's rights, but don't want to identify as a feminist because in their heads, if means shrill and unlikeable and ugly. They want to communicate that they think guys are awesome and they're fun and chill and desirable. (Apparently feminists are none of these things). I get it. They communicate in soundbites, and dismantling the entire cultural narrative about feminism isn't worth it to them.

The only starlet I;m aware of in recent memory to identify as a feminist is Miley Cyrus. Figure that out.

I guess it's hard to buy something that she doesn't really try to sell.

I don't understand what you mean. Beyonce doesn't "sell" her feminism so people don't believe her (even though she's talked about it on her album and in interviews). But alternatively, she's self-absorbed so her saying she's a feminist isn't to be believed?

I understand now way her PR has been pushing the eco angle in the past year. She should avoid talking about other topics. Her comments about the casting of Four in Divergent were as stupid as her views on feminism. Not sure yet if she is simply uneducated, young or a bit of an idiot.

Oh, goody. Another starlet that needs to enroll in a Feminism 101 course. You know, it wouldn't be so bad if they could formulate a decent answer for why today's feminism doesn't work for them instead of pulling the old "tee hee, I'm not a feminist because I shave my pits and don't hate men." Really, send Ashley Judd* over to this young woman's house, stat, for some schoolin'.

*Seriously, for all of Ashley Judd's flaws and pretentiousness, she knows her some feminism.
