I too was wondering about insurance. People like RDJ (known substance abuse issues) and John Cazale (dying of lung cancer) who had others pay their insurance because the studio wouldn’t. I guess the physicals are not that intense. Beyond omission, he also may have lied to physicians, because if they involved physical examinations, I have to imagine that any surgical scars would be seen and questioned.
I am so glad he was able to work and give us T’Challa. Coogler says he was diagnosed before Black Panther, but at Stage 3, he likely had the symptoms and no diagnosis while filming Civil War. Amazing strength and endurance.

The thing is, a regular physical for a man his age wouldn’t have picked it up because they don’t screen for colon cancer usually until age 50. If he didn’t have symptoms, they may have noticed something in the blood work (signs of the body fighting cancer), but I don’t know if that shows up on a typical preventative blood panel.
I don’t know if he had a family history of it. I do know it is yet another illness that hits black people harder than most in this country. Maybe this will lead to better screening practices. Or encourage people to get over any embarrassment and get checked out because, yes - if treated early, outcomes can be good.

Whoever did know (and I have to think someone at Marvel/Disney did eventually), it is a real testament to Chadwick that nobody leaked it.

We are big Marvel fans over here so the Borokat family has been very sad about this news.
Last night at dinner we talked about Boseman and as the conversation moved on to something else, out of the corner of my eye I saw my 16-year-old (who was wearing a Marvel tee) do the Wakanda Forever sign. And it just hit me so hard because he's deeply in this "gotta be cool" phase (with a healthy dose of teenage self-involvement) and no one was looking at him so it wasn't performative grief. It was simply in solidarity because Black Panther is one of his favorite characters and all-time favorite movies.

I got no love for Disney (they don't call it Mauschwitz for nothing) but higher ups had to know and did not replace him and that shocks me in a good way. This finally broke Chuck Schumer.

There's some footage of Chadwick getting broken up while talking about visiting with some kids who were terminally ill with cancer, who said they were hanging on for the Black Panther movie to come out. Obviously that must have hit him extra hard, but at least he knew that he got to do something in his career that meant a lot to a lot of people, especially kids. It's just extra sad that he was in his prime and getting to work on a lot of really good projects.

It's just extra sad that he was in his prime and getting to work on a lot of really good projects. And that it's such a crucial time for Civil Rights Movement 2.0/BLM and the actor who personified the first mainstream superhero of color is gone. I'm very torn about how they will cast BP in future films. Lots of wonderful actors out there who deserve a chance but those are enormous shoes to fill.

The most common suggestion I have seen is that the mantle would fall to Shuri (T'Challa's sister) next, which has precedence in the comics. I cannot imagine the mix of emotions Letitia Wright would be dealing with if that were to be done.

In his tribute to Boseman, Ryan Coogler said, “I spent the last year preparing, imagining and writing words for him to say, that we weren’t destined to see," so it sounds like they will either need to recast or completely rework the story. I've seen other people suggest Shuri for the next BP, it makes sense in the story, and it would be good to have another female Marvel character.

I think it should definitely be Shuri, I think the goal should be "completely new take on the character" rather than someone attempting to step right into his shoes. I don't really have much to add to the thoughts expressed here but it is just so sad! I hope he gets a posthumous Oscar (I guess it would be for either Da 5 Bloods or the not-yet-released Ma Rainey's Black Bottom).
