I just remembered a similar scenario from many years back and now I think the higher ups really didn't know. Raul Julia was pretty ill during "Addams Family Values" and everyone on the production knew (this pre-dates the internet and TMZ and evil HIPAA-violating medical professionals) but they managed to insure him because he was trying to work as long as possible while he physically could for his family. Raul's reputation was/is similar to Chadwick's - completely beloved, no one can say a bad word. A lot of stories have come out about how much the production, cast, and studio supported Raul and let him work rather than recast and they look golden for it. If Disney and Marvel knew there would be press statements like "Chadwick is family, we are proud he was our Black Panther for as long as he was, we will move forward in his honor and make sequels he would be proud of." There's a massive PR opportunity and they're not taking it which makes me think they really didn't know.
