Nickelodeon just canceled her show Sam and Cat. (That show has been the subject of behind-the-scenes drama like alleged bad feelings about a pay disparity between its stars and some private pictures of the other star Jennette McCurdy being leaked.) Apparently now Ariana can now focus more on her burgeoning music career. Her new album drops next month.

I can understand why some people are comparing her to Mariah Carey* (who obviously influenced Ariana's singing style). The lighthearted style of her videos "The Way" and "Baby I" and the sound are mildly evocative of Mariah circa the Emotions album.






*I'm not saying that Ariana is going to replace MC; there's only one Mimi!

How famous is she in mainstream/pop culture? I'm watching Big Brother, and her brother is on there. He acts like if people found out he was related to her, it would be the end of the world and of his game because she's so famous.

I wonder of everyone in the house has even heard of her. I only knew who she was from an episode of Project Runway, but haven't heard one of her songs. But I don't listen to the radio. I'm so behind the times!

Hopefully this isn't too OT, but I always wonder if Sam and Cat was canceled because of the pictures and disputes or because of the rumors surrounding the executive producer, Dan Schneider. I don't really pay attention to the live action shows on Nickelodeon because for some reason if I'm in the mood for some kind of silly sitcom, I'll usually watch the ones on Disney or TV Land, but I know that there's supposed to be a pattern of a popular show being canceled for no apparent reason other than to launch a spin-off for Schneider's new favorite(s).

I know I've seen some pictures online of McCurday and Schenider used as evidence that the rumors are true, and while maybe nothing happened, I did find the pictures somewhat squicky.

Love Ariana's voice and listened to 'The Way' on repeat last summer. That being said, she needs an image makeover. Right now she looks like an 11 year old who wants to look like a 30 year old. I'm not sure what she's going for, but it's not working.

OT/ I know it's bitchy, but I will never tire of Rihanna's award show antics.

I remember reading online somewhere that she wears (some) false hair because her hair was overprocessed from dying it red for her TV show.

Even though the pictures are probably PG-13 at best (no nudity, no freaky poses), it caused an uproar. (Her ex denied leaking the pictures.) I felt bad for her.

I didn't. The pictures weren't that raunchy and most people suspected that it was a revenge leak due to the interview she gave in which she trashed that basketball player she went out with. I don't follow the teen set that closely, but what I know about Jenette always seemed to be associated with some sort of drama. I tend not to buy the Schneiderman rumors in this case because Ariana released a statement about the show's cancellation in which she was effusive in her praise of Dan and most of the cast and crew, yet didn't mention Jenette.

That's messed up. Why would she have to do that? I read up on the character of Cat (yeah, I can't believe I did that either), and she is described as: sweet, naive, bubbly and almost always happy. She has a playful nature, often takes things very literally, and faints when she is frightened. She has a very short attention span, and has bright red hair dyed to resemble her favorite snack, a red velvet cupcake.

Red velvet cupcakes have cheesecake frosting. Couldn't her hair have been dyed blonde with red natural-looking extensions for the red velvet part? Or permanently dyed red with blonde highlights? It doesn't seem right that a girl should have to ruin her hair to play a character in a sitcom. Anyway, the description of Cat's personality explains why Ariana can't get herself out of cute mode. Being adorable and childlike has probably become second nature for her at this point.

I watched her video for Problem and was astounded by her lack of stage presence. All she does is make these big baby eyes at the camera while singing the song without opening her mouth.
