A sundae bar!!! At a funeral!! clutches pearls... What's wrong with just getting maudlin drunk at the reception after and telling borderline appropriate stories about the deceased??

Also, I think the black at a funeral thing might be evolving--it might be a regional thing, but I've lost count of the number funerals/memorial services I've heard or read about that have a sundae bar, 5K, dance party, drunken beach bonfire that may include a casting of ashes, etc. Many of my college students have never been to a funeral because they don't know anyone who's died, so there's also a break in understanding traditional etiquette. That said, I feel bad for Ariana. The black at a funeral thing is changing. At my grandfather’s funeral a few years ago, my aunt wore a lovely blue and green dress because the colors reminded her of the ocean and he loved saling. My mom had on a dark green dress. I was only wearing black because the one dress I owned at the time that still fit me was black. Looking back, my mom wished that more people had worn something other than black. Topic: I think whoever said it upthread was right, her dress being too short and the Bishop acting inappropriately can both be true. I actually felt bad for her for the first time since Manchester.

If Cicely Tyson can wear that huge crazy distracting hat and get praised, then to me Ariana gets a pass on a dress a few inches shorter than some people would like. I'm more concerned with people's actions, and the pervy dudes get all the side eye from me. And that's coming from an old fogey I am also Team Have The Funeral You Want. Ice cream bar? Go for it, Aretha. You only die once. My auntie had her viewing and funeral in a bar she loved in her youth, and included several Native American traditions instead of getting all church-y by the religion that was forced upon her. Then after her body was taken away there was a big dinner and an open bar and her favorite music and we all honored her the way she wanted. My mother (her sister) is hardcore Catholic and is still super pissed about it. WHY. I thought it was lovely and represented my sweet old auntie perfectly.

The choir at my great aunts’ funeral sang Jolly Holiday from Mary Poppins (her name was Mary) and while most people there loved it, the priest gave her daughter crap about it while they were still at the church and it only wound up upsetting her. I wasn’t there but my mom was, and she was pissed off at the priest on her cousin’s behalf. It’s not like they sang a freaking KISS song or anything, it was an innocent Disney song about how lovely it is spending time with a woman named Mary. I was pissed off at the priest too when I heard the story later.
So yeah, funerals should should be whatever the deceased or their family want them to be.
I still think the dress was too short but I’ve been an old fogey most of my life so there you go.

Black at a funeral is definitely regional. I live in the southeast and black (other than for family members) is considered a bit...extra. Most people wear navy blue, gray, or brown. Black isn’t unacceptable, but people wear it because that’s the dress they have that is seasonal and fits. I have been to several funerals where I was instructed to wear the deceased’s favorite color.

My mother didn't want anyone to wear black at her funeral, so we didn't.
Ariana's short dress was inappropriate for most of us but what about if Aretha had strippers at her funeral like they do in Taiwan and parts of rural China? 😂😂😂

Her ex Mac Miller has died according to TMZ. She really dodged a bullet with that one. Yikes.

This is something that anyone who has ever loved an addict can relate to. I admired my mom for breaking the hold her addict son had on her. You can only do so much to save someone from themselves. I hope Ariana holds strong and fights the thought that it's her fault this man killed himself, which will be doubly hard to do because she's going to be blamed by people the world over for his death. I remember when I first saw this video and thinking "these two are sooo into each other, they're totally hooking up!" There was a real spark between them. Now she's got herself another iffy guy who is sweet and funny with a dark side. Lord help her and her bleeding heart.
