Now tomorrow morning, I'll breakfast in bed, and then get straight up into the tweeds.

France was occupied by England and Joan led the French army in (I think) two battles that beat the English back significantly. Then she was captured and the French king abandoned her.

Thanks, everyone—I knew the military stuff but I guess I was just left wanting. Not that a peasant woman who comes from nowhere leading combat victories over a dominant military power is unimpressive, but the scale of her legend seemed to be so much larger than that.
I didn’t realize that she wasn’t officially canonized until 1920, which is very interesting timing, in re world events and also explains, in part, her stories in film. I think when I was reading about her cult and role as a folk saint it was more enlightening. Another detail that answered a question: I had wondered why she was considered so important when my ideas of French culture include “anti-monarchy”, and apparently she was somewhat unpopular during the French Revolution.
I’m sure this isn’t news to anyone, but thanks for being there through my googling.

It’s that time of year: the FB pages for the 1920s themed NYE parties at the local restaurants and bars are popping up. My immediate reaction is “again with this!” and otherwise not charitable, because of cliché and lazy theme-making, so I’ve been amusing myself by trying to think of counter-narrative costumes contra the opulence of Gatsby-esque beads.
My favorite so far is Countess Markievicz.

Quoting myself, no more maybes, Ireland 2019 will be different, tho we wait for all the legislation to be put in place it feels different, better, safer already. Rest easy Ann. Its different today not perfect but certainly very different to 35 yrs ago and even from last year. Thinking of those who knew Ann and all the Ann’s and their lonely stories. Remembering Ann at this time of year again and all the Ann’s whose stories we never heard.

At least your country has moved away from that time, fitz. Government in mine wants to go back to it.

THANK YOU! I am so excited. I am not a history scholar by any means, but, um, I love the series Connections. I thought about the (perhaps speculative) connection between the Black Death, underwear, and the rise in literacy more than I'd care to admit when Ebola was still #1 in the news. I don't have a favorite historical era, but I love plagues, diffusion of inventions and food, and contact between cultures. I'm a true delight at all cocktail parties. I just saw this post at the beginnings of the thread, from 2014. I loved Connections! My kids loved it to! I’d really like to see this back, I must see if it’s available somewhere. But please Netflex et al, find this is worth perusing as a series! Good call chonies!

I was reminded that this weekend will be the 50th anniversary of Kent State. That just kind of took my breath away. It’s still such a clear and horrifying memory. Very hard to grasp it was a half-century ago.
