Exactly. I have too much respect for men in general than to reduce them to pathetic, powerless creatures of lust who have no self control. Are some like that? Sure. But I’m not going to assume they all are. And those who can’t (WON’T) control themselves, I place blame for their actions squarely on them. Period.
I watched the doc and found it fascinating/horrifying/disturbing — but not at all shocking. I’ve heard and seen too much about these twisted ways of thinking to be surprised.
It does make me even more afraid for the future, though. I live in the same state as the Duggars and people like them have a lot of power. Not as extreme, maybe, in their way of life, not full IBLP, but of a similar stripe. This terrifies me. So easy to sucker people in. “Look how good and moral and wholesome they are. Look how well-behaved the children are. Yeah, I don’t want that many, but I admire how they live.” They’re sucked in by the facade, not seeing what’s underneath. And that’s how we all end up getting sucked into a dystopian dreamworld.
I’m all for well-behaved children, but the notion of breaking a toddler’s will? Blanket training? Expecting little girls to act like mothers for younger siblings? Teaching children (particularly girls) that their bodies aren’t their own and they should submit to authority no matter what feels right? Flames. Flames, on the side of my face.
I was already disgusted by the Duggar parents’ handling of Josh. But I was reminded again of how horribly they failed their daughters — and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were actually other victims of his out there. Good for Jill for fighting back by punching him and telling her parents (even if it didn’t do much good).

Expecting little girls to act like mothers for younger siblings? Michelle talking in that totally fake, submissive 'baby voice' about how HER CHILDREN are her "buddy" until they're weaned, and then she passes them off to an older daughter to take care of was revolting.

I have followed the Duggars casually for years and thought I knew a lot about their cult, but there were things in the docuseries (I've watched eps 1 & 2) that shocked me. The woman saying she continuously spanked her 14-month-old baby because he wouldn't stop crying almost brought me to tears. I feel so so sorry for children, BABIES, being brought up in this cult. And there was a very disturbing sequence showing Josh and Anna's wedding, where a TLC cameraman was explaining they were going to get a shot of them walking into their hotel room and shutting the door on their wedding night (to imply they are having sex for the first time) edited with an IBLP survivor discussing the 3x sexual assault she suffered on her own wedding night. This woman also said her marriage included a "discipline contract" with her husband and he was allowed to spank her an make her sit in the corner like a child as punishment if she disobeyed him. This is a common feature of IBLP marriages. And there was another survivor who recounted Bill Gothard himself telling her that she needed to style her hair with more curls. The big hair, frumpy dress styling these women are forced to do has no Biblical basis, it's just BG's personal preference that the women in his cult present themselves with these ridiculous hairstyles and fashion.
Hearing from other IBLP survivors (male and female) besides Jill Duggar is really powerful because if you just watched 19 Kids and Counting you would not realize how widespread this cult is and how many kids suffer living under these abusive conditions. The doc said that people think of cults as having one central location, but the Duggar show was used as a propaganda and recruiting tool for IBLP so there are pockets of this insanity all over the country.
Jim and Bobbye Holt make an appearance, and it is disturbing to hear him casually brush off that his wife was 14 years old when he started pursuing her (he was 19, I think). I learned on r/duggarsnark yesterday that Bobbye has left him and filed a restraining order! Their appearance was so uncomfortable and awkward together.
This is not a defense of Josh at all, but it becomes very clear watching this docuseries how easy it would be to develop perverse ideas about sexuality and carry out sexual crimes in this atmosphere where even babies are sexualized. It's not surprising he did what he did.
The clips of Jill and Jessa on the Megyn Kelly show enraged me. I've never seen such irresponsible journalism. That was Jim Bob's PR clean-up, and Megyn Kelly aided and abetted a cover-up. I felt so horrible for the girls, who felt forced to help their deviant brother and aid their crappy excuse for a father.

IBLP is nothing but a child-abusing sex cult. I have never encountered a more sex-obsessed group of individuals in my life. Obsessed with sex, but ashamed of it; obsessed with procreation, but despise kids. And they're trying to fuck up the world for the rest of us by infesting government with their twisted foot soldiers ("Generation Joshua").

Watching Shiny Happy People now. I knew, just like everyone else in this thread, about the buddy parenting, about the patriarchy, about Michelle’s stupid fake baby voice, about Bill Gothard’s bullshit, about Michael and Debi Pearl, about all of it. (I am sympathetic to Amy Duggar, but seeing her treat her husband badly over and over was uncomfortable, to say the least.) But actually seeing the segment on blanket training has left me in tears and sick to my stomach.

I had actually forgotten that Gothard was pushed out of IBLP for sexual harassment. Hearing the details of his actions was new to me. The women who stood up against him were so incredibly brave. According to someone on Reddit, he lives in the Chicago suburbs and keeps to himself.

Jana Duggar got married and wore an off-the-shoulders, low back dress while doing it. And there was dancing at the wedding. Is Jim-Bob OK? Is Michelle praying for the soul of her oldest daughter? Or are they just happy she'll hopefully start popping out a few babies before it's 'too late.' link
