You know, Kate, people grieve in different ways. I don't understand Toby being punished for being honest about how he feels towards Baby Jack. He is trying, and he's getting himself healthy. Kate is coming off selfish to me.
BUT I am not a parent, and, outside the nephews, have zero experience with something like this situation.

Is he, though? Saying he just wanted to be happy to research a treatment that, as Kate pointed out, was unrelated to Jack's blindness, seems like he's still in denial. He/they should definitely be in therapy. Favorite part of last night was seeing how far Kate and Rebecca's relationship has come. I love Rebecca's YOLO attitude in light of her diagnosis and her "you're fat, I'm ancient, we're gorgeous" line was one of my favorites of the season.

So, I binge watched this. It's messy and manipulative, but I like how not-cynical it is. How it shows relationships as complicated and painful, but also loving and kind. The actors really make it feel heartfelt and connected even if the plots are sometimes way out there.
I also thought that I would hate Jack and his sainted self. But Ventimiglia makes him such a warm presence, you understand why the family is shaken in their foundation when he dies. IMO the show is also pretty good about showing that "sainted Jack on a pedestal" is the twisted perception of his family after his death and not the reality of the man. Who was certainly loving, supportive, kind and often a force for positive change. But he also had a drinking problem, had difficulty expressing negative feelings, could be overwhelming to others in his energy and drive and was prone to corny speechifying (I love when they make fun of his corny speeches!).

Holy cow, that was an ending last night! That should have been the season finale cliffhanger.

Holy cow, that was an ending last night! That should have been the season finale cliffhanger. My reaction was sort of...OK? It just seems like a road that would've been pursued by that member of "the big 3" already. But, sure...OK. I actually really enjoyed Kevin and Madison last night. And I thought Toby and Miguel's talk about taking things 'one day at a time' was heartfelt and funny ('you know, I started the hashtag to bring that back--you don't cancel Rita Moreno.').

Well, not if you're told they died. Why would you doubt the information?
Nice to have this family back. Watching Rebecca's dementia progress is really painful, especially in someone relatively young. Is she around 70 there? I don't remember how old she was when she had the Big Three.

Well, not if you're told they died. Why would you doubt the information? Told by whom? Spoiler: {Spoiler}He hired a PI to find William--if his mother died, there'd be a record of her death. But she didn't die, so who did the PI get the info from? In the pilot Randall tells Beth he found his father and when she asks about his mother he says "she was a crack addict who died during childbirth." Where did that info come from is the question. In other words, seems like a rewrite by the show.

Not to focus on the shallow, but did anyone else think the actors looks significantly older than usual last night? I was kinda left wondering if the filming situation is different, like maybe the lighting people or makeup people were limited due to pandemic. Justin Hartley looked especially rough and the actress who plays Madison also looked very different.
I sort of hated the references to the pandemic, it dominates every aspect of real life, I didn't feel like watching it play out on my tv too.

I didn’t mind mentioning the pandemic but they had a continuity issue. They used some scenes from last season to tell the story. No way those cops wouldn’t have been wearing masks when they brought Rebecca back to the house. I think they should have waited till the next episode to include it.

I didn't finish the 2nd episode because of the pandemic stuff. I understand they felt they needed to address it and incorporate it, but like you said, we're living this. I read recaps on the rest of the episode.
