Here's the thing: Gaston In the cartoon version, Gaston is a buffoon. An idiot who is full of himself, but doesn't come off as creepy-dangerous from the get-go. In the movie version? To me, he comes out swinging. Right from his first moment on screen, he reads as creepy, misogynistic, stalker, and imminently dangerous. I didn't find him humorous in the least. To me, he read as every man who's ever put a woman in an uncomfortable position. As every man who's ever been an abuser. As the guy who would lock you in the basement and treat you like garbage. To me (again, this is just my feeling), he came off as a slightly less creepy Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs). I was *very* uncomfortable with him. Just my $.02. Overall, it was a very pretty movie. I thought it dragged a LOT. I thought Audra McDonald was *amazing* and Ewan McGregor, while no Jerry Orbach, did a fine job. Emma Watson was fine. At least it wasn't Anne Hathaway... Yes, the character in the new movie was definitely more menacing than the cartoon version, but I thought Luke Evans did the best job of creating and performing the character compared to the other actors (Kevin Kline was a close second). I enjoyed watching that performance even though the character was the villain. I wish we'd had more scenes of him and Josh Gad. I just realized Luke Evans is also in Girl on the Train as a controlling husband. He's got that type down pat.

Oh, Hon, Anne Hathaway woulda KILLED in this! Exactly. Whatever your feelings are about her, you have to admit that she has a much better singing voice than Emma Watson. Gaston did come off a bit creepy and more blatantly evil here, but I think that served Le Fou's {Spoiler}face heel turn and made him a much more likable/sympathetic character this time around. In the original he's basically just a stupid toady who disappears during the big fight at the end. He's much more fleshed-out here and I liked that. But that might just be my love for Josh Gad talking. I've only ever seen Luke Evans in the Hobbit movies so I was shocked by how good he was in this.

My daughter and I loved it, although I agree that it did drag a bit. The casting was superb, I didn't even mind Ewan. When we left, my nine-year-old said that she thought that the prince was more handsome as the beast, and you know, I think I did too.

I had a really great time and shows were selling out left and right where I live. Luke Evans was definitely the standout and strongest singer, but I loved all the roles and nobody fell short for me. I'm glad they added more depth to Belle, the Beast and LeFou. It's amazing that Dan Stevens did the ballroom scene on stilts.

I'm probably going to be corrected, but if that was his singing voice as beast without altering it in some way, the man is damn talented. He's good either way, but dang.

Dan Stevens actually performed the whole part with prosthetic make-up and on stilts, the CGI face was not the original plan and was added much later. I've also wondered if they fiddled with his voice or if he did the Beast voice himself. Robby Benson was able to do both voices on his own in the original, which kinda blew my mind when I found out because the two voices are so different.

Dan Stevens sang in Downton Abbey (the episode where he and William were "lost" on the battlefield for a day or so). I'm pretty sure it was him, and he had a wonderful voice. I'm looking forward to seeing this.

Dan Stevens as the Beast is a great relief. As much as I love the animated version, I still cringe at the end when the Beast transforms back into a prince. The drawing of the prince is so bad. At least Dan Stevens will look good after the spell breaks.

Hate to break the spell (hee), but I thought Dan Stevens as "Prince" looked as if someone had cast a young Breckin Meyer as Spiccoli.
YMMV.
