Hate to break the spell (hee), but I thought Dan Stevens as "Prince" looked as if someone had cast a young Breckin Meyer as Spiccoli. YMMV. That made me LOL. Dan as Beast though? He can get it.

At the end when he transformed back, I thought he had a very derp look on his face. But he played cruelty very well at the beginning.

I didn't think Emma Watson's singing voice was that bad BUT, don't hit me, she's not BEAUTIFUL enough to be Belle. One of the three village girls mooning over Gaston was far cuter. I did like her emoting during the ballroom dancing, really looked like she was falling in love and amazed to be doing so. We were kind of irritated with some of the extra bits added to the story, they really needed more fleshing out. I think I did a spoiler... { Such as...}They didn't really clarify that Belle's father hadn't told her too much about her mom before the Paris trip. AND Agatha, wait what? Enchantress hangs out waiting for stuff to happen?

Meh. You are being far too charitable. Ewan not doing his research on an iconic role played by a revered Broadway theater and Hollywood screen actor WAS a dick move. It would be like you never studying up on the work of Les Paul. It's Jerry freaking Orbach, and any actor worth his salt knows both who he is and how fabulous he was. The man has a freaking theater named after him on Broadway - that's how badass he was. I haven't seen it yet, so perhaps Ewan isn't bad in it, but if he is he was definitely covering for the fact that he sucked by relaying that story. And if he sucks, it would mar the movie for me a bit because Orbach was so damned awesome in it. Jerry Orbach isn't well known in the UK. I know him as Lumiere only because I loved the film. I can't wait to see this version. I know a couple of people who've seen it and they said it was awesome!

I felt that way at the initial transformation, but he cleaned up nicely. For the record, I loved it, and I refuse to accept any excuse for Ewan not knowing about Jerry Orbach. I won't hate Ewan forever, but he gets a big dose of the side eye. Because Jerry Orbach.

I had a really great time and shows were selling out left and right where I live. Luke Evans was definitely the standout and strongest singer, but I loved all the roles and nobody fell short for me. I'm glad they added more depth to Belle, the Beast and LeFou. It's amazing that Dan Stevens did the ballroom scene on stilts. I saw this yesterday, Luke Evans was the standout for me as well. His singing voice was my favorite and he had the swagger down pat. I haven't seen the original in a million years so I couldn't determine what was added, but there were definitely things I didn't remember. A lot of those castle scenes gave me vertigo, all the narrow stairs with no railings and cliff edges were terrifying.

I took littlest azaleaprincess to see it Saturday and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Emma Watson's voice is weak but there were enough strong singers around that I didn't mind. Visually it was a treat.

I loooooooooved it. Full disclosure, growing up I wanted to be Belle on Broadway. Too bad I can't sing!
I intentionally didn't read any reviews, stories on the making of the film, or interviews. I was going to see it regardless, so I just wanted to go in not knowing anything. I liked how they fleshed out the story a bit for both Belle and Beast, and I enjoyed all the new music.
To me, the movie had an energy that I have always found lacking in the musical. Gaston's number in the pub, for instance, had an energy that I've just never gotten from live productions.
I wouldn't say that any one part was miscast, but I thought Lumiere, Cogsworth, and Mrs. Potts were all so-so. Ewan Mcgregor and Emma Thompson were no match for Jerry Orbach and Angela Lansbury.
I'm more than willing to keep throwing my money at Disney. I plan to see it in theaters again and hope to get the DVD for my birthday. Because I'm five. π

That was my favorite number in the movie, it had such a nice build to it.
I'm such a big Angela Lansbury fan that people post on MY FB timeline on HER birthday, but I never liked her singing voice all that much. However, I loved the other parts of her role as Mrs. Potts so Emma Thompson (much as I like her acting in general) didn't quite measure up. And Ewan was definitely no Jerry Orbach.

Saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it, what a visual feast it was!
Completely disagree with those ragging on Ewan McGregor's performance. I was expecting something terrible, but he was just a French talking candlestick. Emma Thompson was just as good as Angela Lansbury as the teapot, and Lansbury's singing voice was grating and awful. Emma Watson did a great job, and I thought her singing voice was good. Not Broadway belting, obviously, but lovely and sweet.
Funny you say that because I think the same. She's a pretty girl but not the most beautiful in all the land. HOWEVER, my husband said he thought it was great that the "most beautiful girl in town" was not some over the top voluptuous babe with big lips and huge hair, but that "Beauty" was a lovely girl who was smart and dignified.
I could not reconcile that growls beast with Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey. I couldn't with mild-mannered Robby Benson either though.
