I watched this on Netflix today, and it was alright. Though, if I saw it as a kid, I probably would have loved it.
Kevin Kline and Luke Evans were standouts. As was Audra McDonald, but I don’t expect any less from her. Everyone else was fine. Emma Watson was mildly disappointing. This is a Disney musical, I expected a “bigger” performance (I guess that’s the word to describe it). Project to the back row, girl! (Not just her voice, her...everything). She did have a couple moments she did well, though. I don’t like Anne Hathaway much, but I agree that she would have killed it in this role.
Also? Literally everything else Josh Gadd did in this role was gayer than the moment he dances with another man that lasted 1.5 seconds. I can’t believe people made a stink about that.

I honestly think that if they hadn't said anything about him dancing with a man that no one would've really noticed it or cared. That particular moment only lasts for like half a second. His blatant crush on Gaston, however, lasted for most of the movie.

His blatant crush on Gaston, however, lasted for most of the movie. Exactly. Like, right up from the first scene he was in I thought, "Okay, Gadd is just straight up playing the character as gay and he clearly has a crush on Gaston." And because of that I thought the dancing scene would actually be somewhat significant. But instead it was as he was spinning his lady partner the other guy steps in and Gadd just has a sort of mild "Huh?" look on his face. And then in the big overhead shot of the ballroom they cut to right after that you did not see them dancing together, making it seems that it actually lasted just a fraction of second. I really didn't understand how that moment got so blown up when it was, seriously, about the least gay moment for that character after several scenes of him clearly crushing on Gaston. I figured if people were going to make a stupid stink about a gay character in a Disney movie, they'd object to just about every other scene Gadd was in, but...whatever. I guess two men briefly touching each other is truly what spreads the gay cooties.
