Looks like Putin finally had enough. Alexei Navalny dead at 47.There aren't many people alive today where I'm going to celebrate when they eventually croak, but Putin is one of them.

Agreed, phillipa. I just hope he doesn't take the rest of the world out when he goes.

Since Pierre Polievre came up on the US Politics thread and was compared to Trump I'm going to chime in and say that he scares me more. Like Trump and US Republicans, Pierre is completely in line with their political leanings. His mentor and advisor Stephen Harper is the chair of the world coalition of right wing political parties, which includes Republicans and Victor Orban's party. He 100% aligns with it.
He is racist. Unlike Trump and like a true Canadian, he uses quieter methods of showing his true colors, like being publicly seen meeting with leaders of Canadian right wing racists and using hashtags on social media that ping those communities.
He has no interest in helping working Canadians. As housing minister under Harper he did nothing about the growing affordable housing crisis and as opposition leader he has voted against any measure that might help.
He is anti choice and make no mistake that if the conservatives thought it politically expedient, he would put it on the agenda. Conservatives have put forward bills to restrict choice and he and his members have voted for them. They do not support reproductive freedom.
He's a slogan-loving, no-substance weenie.
I am no fan of Trudeau. I think he's arrogant and vapid and corrupt. The liberals have also not done enough about housing or grocery price fixing and other affordable housing issues. Trudeau should have moved to enshrine reproductive rights the moment he sensed that the current incarnation of the Conservatives might come for it but he prefers to keep it as an election issue, which is vile.
Working Canadians are sadly falling for his blatant truth twisting and somehow think that because he supported the Trucker convey he supports working Canadians. He does not. Canadians who want an alternative to Trudeau should vote for the NDP. Every good thing that we've got in recent years has been because of the NDP flexing their muscles.
I am really scared for our next election. I think that too many people will vote for Pollievre not realizing that these are not Brian Mulroney's Conservatives. Too many people are lapping up their bullshit.

I'm generally really sad to see what's happening in Canada. It is made even worse by the province I am focussed on : Alberta- where their leader is absolutely like Trump- but I think worse. (Danielle Smith) My parents are conservative- and absolutely hate Trudeau. Thus, I think it is likely they will vote for Pollievre. I try to talk to them about the danger to their pensions (Danielle Smith literally ran on the idea that she would remove the CPP from Alberta and give them all an Alberta pension- terrifying). My parents still voted for Smith. When I asked why- their pensions will disappear- their response: "Oh, she won't ACTUALLY do that" ? She literally ran on the idea- you voted for her - and now the thing she said she would do you are hoping she won't do- just... because?? I just can't. Federally yeah- the health care is getting so bad. And that is provincial and federal. Everything I am hearing/reading suggests it is bad country wide (doctor shortage, crazy wait times). My close friend has been waiting 8 months for an MRI. She is in so much pain she has missed months of work... but - because it's not going to kill her she can wait (and I guess for some people that's fine). Or- her doctor said she can pay for an MRI and get it done tomorrow. She wan't paying- on principal. She just told me last night- she will be paying to get it done. Yay "free" health care! She's lucky that she can pay- but she had to wait a few moths to save up. My brother had to move out of the city because he said crime and homeless encampments were getting so bad he was worried for his kids. Sigh... and, that's the thing- when things are bad people are more likely to vote for change.

In the US even when you're paying there are waits, so the concept that paid = faster isn't true. So many primary care doctors can't see you when you're sick, offering up an appointment 3 weeks out. So stupid. You end up having to go to an urgent care and paying more for that than you would for a regular visit. It's all designed to extract money from you.

Yes, the conservative premiers are also very much aligned with the conservative party federally. If you like what Danielle Smith and Ford are doing, by all means vote Conservative federally but they are planning to continue to erode health care until Canadians beg for a private alternative. They're targeting trans kids. They're coming for your pension (but not theirs, especially not PP, who hasn't had a real job in his entire life). I'm so sad and I'm so scared that people don't see it.

Another problem in the US is that the number of residencies is capped. It's absolutely infuriating that this is a completely fixable problem and I have never heard either party even mention it. dragonflie, I feel for you. Insane to me that people are voting for something they don't actually want to happen. WTF is wrong with them?
