This is all news to me, as I am not invested beyond enjoying 70s and the Ranch, so I retract my weak-sauce benefit of the doubt in the previous post, and will just echo “Yay, Topher.”

Kutcher and Kunis are now claiming that they support victims and that the letters were written several months ago. But they also talk about Masterson's "innate goodness" and him being a stellar role model in said letters. So, yeah, they didn't think the letters would be made public and now they're backpedaling. So gross.

Their 'apology' video is absolute shit. They both seem pissed to have to do it.

So, yeah, they didn't think the letters would be made public and now they're backpedaling. So gross. 100% they didn't think the letters would be public and that's the only reason this is now a problem for them. I didn't even listen to their entire "apology" video because they weren't actually apologizing. As soon as Mila started her speech about how they've always supported victims, I'd had enough. It's possible to write an ethical character letter for someone who's guilty of a crime, but such a letter would be able to say that the person admitted their guilt, showed remorse, is atoning for their crime, changed their life, would not be a danger to the public, and that a long incarceration would do more harm than good. Of course, all of that is not applicable in any way to Danny Masterson. And when it's a crime like this where there are victims who were severely harmed and who are clear on wanting a lengthy prison sentence, if you don't have a damn good reason to contradict what the victims are requesting, then it's a no-go. From what I have read, the letters just ignored the existence of the victims, which is cowardly and makes the whole thing unjustifiable.

My God but that story just got worse and worse the more I read. And the Rammstein stuff - yikes!

Masterson hasn't admitted jack, he's still pretending that he's a good guy and they're playing along because otherwise they'd have to admit they've been friends with a serial rapist who drugged his victims. Which would be very hard to face, don't get me wrong, but the reality here is that he raped at least two women, and pretending that his being a good friend to you should somehow offset his horrific abuse is not OK. They don't show anything that makes me think he atoned for his wrongdoing. What they tell us is that they weren't in his victim category, so he could be nice and lovely to them.

cubanitafresca, that's what happened to Batgirl, so that's $90 million down the drain WITHOUT a major star in it having credible abuse allegations. I'm SO happy Ashton and Mila are getting the backlash and even happier that a rapist is going to prison.

Good point, ratscabies. Since Joss was behind the scenes, it would be less noticible than an actor on screen. The Flash STILL received a theatrical release despite Ezra Miller. We still don't know about why Batgirl was shelved.

I'm SO happy Ashton and Mila are getting the backlash and even happier that a rapist is going to prison. But that's kind of apples to oranges. While the Joss Wheden stuff broke during the filming, he left the project before it was complete. The studio decided not to release the film because they believed the movie was a mess that would damage the franchise. On the other hand, Magazine Dreams and The Flash both tested high and were well reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes. I am with you on the Ashton and Mila backlash. That letter was just appalling. I get they wanted to support their friend. But they could have done it in a way that didn't deny what he had done.
