DJ and his daughter were around in the first episode but didn't say much. I believe the backstory is that he and his wife are both in the military and the wife is currently deployed.
I was actually surprised by how good Sara Gilbert's acting has been because I always thought she was pretty weak in the original series. She looks genuinely tired and emotional to me and I find it believable when she's teary...unlike Lecy, who reeeeeeally has to struggle to squeeze out some tears.

More characters we haven't seen since the 90's, and yet still no answers to "what ever happened to?" half of the cast. That poker game could have answered a few questions.
Still, it was nice for Aunt Jackie (recent Tony nominee!) to get more than a "dumb dumb" line, and that is a great final line there with the "you not here not better than you here better" paraphrase.

So there is no backstory anywhere for anyone. Bev had money and now has none, Jackie had a cute little house and now rents an apartment and Darlene with all her skills as a writer has no job and lives at home.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has an excellent article in Huffington post about Roseanne: Don't Be Fooled, 'Roseanne' Is Really TV's Most Anti-Trump ShowOne of the things he points out is that the Connor's economic issues were present during the previous administrations, but have been exasperated during Trump's administration. A lot of the Trump supporters I personally know have lives like the Connor's and I just can't figure out why they think he is going to save them when all evidence points to things getting a whole lot worse with him in office.

ABC just cancelled the show!!! Well, color me shocked! I thought for sure ABC would just slap her wrist and carry on. Good for them. Seriously - she does this all the time. This isn't even the first time she's compared a black woman to an ape (the other was Susan Rice). That sort of behavior shouldn't be rewarded with a network TV show. For them to go cancellation I suspect either A LOT has been going on behind the scenes and this was the final straw for the network, and/or like Wanda Sykes, other major cast/crew members told ABC they were going to walk.

They were probably also scared of advertisers pulling out of the show. You can't allow someone who freely tweets stuff like that to have a show on television.
Everyone's got to pay their bills, but I really wonder about John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and Sara Gilbert signing on for this show. They all seem to have pretty steady careers.

Whitney Cummings also left, and I suspect there were more.
I'm also shocked that ABC axed it so quickly. It's just as well, Laurie Metcalf was completely wasted this season.

I have an irrational love for John Goodman, and I feel bad for all of the actors who are collateral damage in this. But none of them should be surprised. She's a complete nutcase.
That being said, I'm sure she doesn't care how she affects them at all. She has plenty of money and a bright future in the White House.
Edited: I also feel awful for the crew, who don't have name recognition to fall back on. Apologies for not including them in my original post, and thank you everyone for reminding me of their importance.
