Roseanne was on a tear this morning on twitter. She must've been hell to work with so ABC didn't hesitate after her ugly racism on full display. I wonder if Trump will tweet a comment or not? He's holding a rally in Tennessee later today, so odds are he'll mention it and blame it on the "liberal media" and "snowflake Dems."

Honestly, the original Roseanne was one of the places that I felt I saw progressive values that influenced me: feminism, anti-racism (yes, really), mental health is real, and anti-homophobia. None of it was particularly sophisticated, but still. Now, I've known for a long time that Roseanne Barr is mentally ill and not that great of a person. But it still sucks to see someone who made something I valued deteriorate into what she is now. And I don't blame the mental illness for her racism, but I do blame it for making her susceptible to crazy conspiracy shit that indulges her racism, and the attention it got her.
Good on ABC for shutting that shit down.

I wonder if it would be possible to reboot the show without Roseanne? Kill off her character. I mean there are a lot of stories to tell and I like the rest of the cast.

Good on ABC for shutting that shit down. The original run of the show very much was that (I have had no interest in watching the revival, but I have been tempted to watch old eps - I've so far resisted because I don't want Hulu thinking I'm into Roseanne now). But it seems like the current Roseanne is a 180 from the original run (she was liberal, feminist, pro-union, etc). The example I've seen a lot of people bring up was the episode where Roseanne tells Darlene she's too touchy-feely liberal in how she's raising her kid and needs to spank her. That is the exact opposite of the original run. In the original run, there was an ongoing thread about how Roseanne and Jackie were abused by their father as kids. It's why they had mixed feelings when he died. It played into a storyline where Jackie was dating an abusive guy. And the biggest example was when DJ stole the family car for a joy ride and Roseanne was so furious she smacked him. She immediately regretted it and felt terrible. At the end of the episode she apologized to DJ, explained how angry she was at herself for hitting him and confessed to him that his grandpa hit her a lot when she was a kid. It was a powerful thing. But they completely erased that history so this Roseanne can espouse the actual Roseanne's new conservative beliefs.

Good on ABC for shutting that shit down. Her original show was anti racist. Roseanne premiered in October 1988 while my mother was dying of cancer in Ottawa, Canada. I still remember the absolute BALM that show was for me; a show about a dysfunctional working class family, like mine, that made me feel good about myself and my family. I got to see a few episodes before my mom passed away, and it made me see us in a whole different light. My mom died the same week that Oprah Winfrey pranced onstage in skinny jeans, hauling a wagon representing the amount of fat she had lost on her liquid diet. My mom was overweight most of her adult life, and she was happy about the weight she was losing during her cancer treatment, which was equally dysfunctional, and her doctors were NOT happy about it. I remember Oprah making me feel bad. Roseanne made me feel good. What a year.

I hope they’re at least considering this, because everyone else on the show is awesome. It’s been established that she has an addiction to opiates so they could have her OD offscreen and the family would be dealing with the aftermath.

As a Disney junkie, I’m so happy that Disney acted so quickly without waiting to see which way the wind blew. I also heard that before they officially announced the cancelation, Iger called Jarrett to apologize and let her know the show was going to be canceled. Before the show premiered, Roseanne cleaned up her twitter, deleting her worst ones. My guess is that ABC, included a morality clause in her contract. They probably figured that would keep her in line. And once the show became such a hit she figured she was untouchable - she was wrong.
I also want to say, Tim Allen is a whiny bitch who cries that Hollywood hates him because he’s a Republican. But I’ve never seen any racist comments from him. Nor was his show racist. I think it’s kind of unfair that he’s getting lumped in with the crazy that is Roseanne.

As I’ve said upthread I’m a big fan of the original Roseanne. But this was the right choice.
My personal opinion is that Roseanne was always the weakest link on the show. Dan and Jackie are incredible characters and I’m so sorry I won’t see John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf on the show anymore.
Edited to add that John Goodman never won an Emmy for his work on the show, and that’s a damn shame.

I don’t think this will happen because even if they did a reboot without Roseanne Barr she’d still get money from the show because it uses characters she helped create as a producer of the original series which would seem to somewhat defeat the purpose of firing Roseanne. Although my favorite tweet was by someone who suggested they just replace Roseanne with Danny DeVito and have everyone act like nothing has changed.

Roseanne is back on Twitter, blaming Ambien for the tweet.
Uh, no. Just like booze didn’t make Mel Gibson a misogynist and an anti-Semite, Ambien didn’t make you a racist. They just remove the filter (and in Roseanne’s case, she must pop an Ambien nearly every time she logs into Twitter. This was not an isolated, out of character tweet).
