I know I'm a little late to the party here but there is nothing I love more than seeing someone like Roseanne (pro-Trump) getting her comeuppance. I actually have a grin on my face as I type this.
The idea that a pro-feminist, anti-racist, pro-gay like Roseanne Connor would vote for a racist misogynist pig like Trump is so ludicrous to me that it actually insults my intelligence. The only reason that the real Roseanne went from the former to the latter is because she's a drug addicted mentally ill sociopath whose only goal in life, it seems, is to provoke.
I pirated the reboot online (no way was I going to line that pig's pockets) and it was utterly terrible. Becky, Darlene and Roseanne cannot act (anymore) and look like they're reading off cue cards. Roseanne is supposed to be working class and yet looks like her face has had more work done than Mount Rushmore. The jokes are obvious and stilted (compared to the original). And every socially liberal lifestyle was crammed into one family.
Interracial couple? Check. Transgenderish grandchild? Check. Surrogate mother? Check.
The odds of that happening in one immediate family are microscopic.
And to pretend that those who voted for Trump are not, in fact, racist misogynists is truly and utterly disingenuous.
Shame on the rest of the cast for appearing on this shitshow knowing the values the real Roseanne spouts. I hope the new show tanks like this reboot did.

I thought about starting a new thread for "The Connors"- but it might get canned sooner than later and why clutter up the threads field?
That said- I like The Connors without Roseanne. It's not great or revolutionary television- but it's as good as the couple episodes of the Roseanne reboot I saw without the uncomfortable ickiness of supporting the mess Roseanne had become.
Becky and DJ still can't act and Darlene isn't much better. But Dan, Jackie and Grandma always bring their A game and the kids are decent actors (for being kids). I thought they handled the character death respectfully and had everyone expressing their grief as they most likely would in real life. And the reveal of what actually killed her and what had been going on under their noses was handled well without getting overly dramatic or preachy- other than Dan's initial crusade against the woman on the pill bottle.
Dan squirming over his grandson crushing on a boy before coming around to help him pick the boy he liked best was predictable- as was the fact the grandson picked the bad boy over the sweet one. But it was still nice for it to be Dan's moment without Roseanne around to tell everyone else what they should think and be and do.
They ended it with that roving 'round the table sequence they always started with- it just didn't have Roseanne's obnoxious laugh at the end. That actually did seem off. Maybe if they ended it with the whole family laughing (audibly- they are laughing in the shot, but there's no sound) But when the camera started roving around I actually got misty eyed. I do love that family- or at least have nostalgia feels for that family. Didn't miss Roseanne- just the sound of her over the top laugh at the end. It was kinda like seeing an old episode of Mary Tyler Moore but without the kitten meowing. But it didn't wreck the moment for me.
Again, I don't think this is great television. It's ok television. I hope they get good or as good ratings just to prove a point. But I'm not expecting anymore Emmy's in anyone's future. I'm glad they decided the story they wanted to tell was worth telling even if one of their cast members almost blew it. Now they can say what they want to say about the Connor family without one member kissing you know who's butt every other line.

I enjoyed it and didn't miss Roseanne at all.

I don’t have cable and am not invested enough to find it online, so could someone tell me how Roseanne died in spoilers?

Roseanne od'd on painkillers. They set up her addiction at the end of last season.

Yeah, it was initially thought that Roseanne's heart gave out in her sleep, but during the episode the family learns that she'd taken opioids before bed and they stopped her breathing during the night.

Thanks, girlyghoul, for your smart thinking re: a new thread. I've retitled the Roseanne thread accordingly.

I can't decide if John Goodman looks fantastic or sick.

I can't decide if John Goodman looks fantastic or sick. Same. He’s definitely lost more weight since the last season, although I’m hoping the sick look was just makeup because obviously Dan’s a wreck right now. The ratings apparently were way down from the premiere last season, which does not surprise me at all. I think a good portion of the audience (the Trumpers) is probably boycotting it. I’d be surprised if it got renewed for another season.

I can't decide if John Goodman looks fantastic or sick. I thought he looked terrible. Weight loss does not agree with everyone and he's got an odd frog-faced look when he gets thin. I thought the episode was decent, Sara Gilbert was better than she's been and it seemed like there was some genuine grief, probably related to the fact that she grew up on the show and she and Roseanne had been close in those years. Laurie Metcalf, John Goodman, and Estelle Parsons (who looks absolutely amazing for her age) were all great. Laurie especially seemed to tap back into the nutty Aunt Jackie role from the old series. Becky and DJ are still terrible (I used to think Lecy Goranson was pretty good when she was young, but she can't deliver a line anymore), but nothing new there. The saddest part was when Dan first learns about the OD and says "no, I fixed her knees..." My dad is currently taking care of my mom's health problems and he has the exact same attitude, he thinks if he just does everything exactly right, things will be "fixed" and he can reverse all of the problems, but it's not reality. So that part hit me hard in this episode and in the previous episodes where he was trying to find the money to get her knees done. At the very least, I'm interested to see where they'r'e planning to go from here. I'm guessing they're going to go less political without Roseanne.
