Wow this has absolutely no interest for me at all. I’m genuinely wondering if any people of color ever even grew up watching this.

I finally figured out why Lena Dunham annoyed the sh*t out of me. She's a younger version of Rosanne. Both women will say/do anything to be provocative and be seen as the smartest, funniest woman in the room. (And stay in the headlines). They are exhausting.

This is why I can’t get behind RoseanneShe’s claiming that Trump is secretly breaking up sex trafficking rings around the world. Freeing “hundreds” of children each months. What, just...what is she even talking about? This is just bizarre. People in the comments are agreeing this is happening. Are they bots or is this actually a thing on the right? If so, where the hell does it come from? Where, when and how is he doing this? And since when did Trump EVER accomplish something without bragging about it at every opportunity? Yet he’s supposedly quietly playing the hero here? Are there people walking around believing these fantasies (other than Roseanne)? I mean, I liked Obama, but if someone told me he secretly saved children from burning buildings in his spare time, I’d call bullshit. But this is not unusual for Roseanne. She’s been about conspiracy theories/these fantasies for a while. It’s dangerous. I have no doubt the show is funny, but I just can’t get behind this.

Wow this has absolutely no interest for me at all. I’m genuinely wondering if any people of color ever even grew up watching this. I don't know if I'm representative of anyone, but I'm Asian American and grew up in a lower middle class family in the SF Bay Area. Roseanne was one of my favorite shows, when it was good. Darlene was my favorite character. I think she and Daria occupied similar spaces in my pop culture diet. But I have little to no interest in the reboot and haven't watched any of the new episodes.

It's too bad Sarah Gilbert couldn't do this without Rosanne, calling it the Conner family or something. Rosanne is abrasive and mentally ill in a really unpleasant way, and that's really too bad.

I'm starting to understand the other side of the "Can we still consume/appreciate the art when the artist is an asshole?" debate, a la Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, etc. It’s funny you mention that, because I am having a similar realization in the opposite way. I have always gotten really eye roll-y when people proudly announce that they’ve never had ANY INTEREST in seeing a Polanski movie because where is the virtue in not seeing something you don’t want to see? But I have caught myself feeling a little smug about my complete lack of desire to watch this reboot, despite having never watched the original and therefore having none of the connections that would make me want to watch this. So this has been a useful learning experience for me (but also Roseanne the person is pure trash my goodness).

Roseanne the person has been an obnoxious provocateur for the past two decades and the unfortunate thing about the success of the reboot is that people are giving her and her personal opinions attention again.
But based on the first two episodes, her character on the show hasn't changed that much. Roseanne Conner voted for Trump because she believes he's shaking things up. Uh huh. Roseanne Conner told her sister that no, she's *not* worse off economically since Trump took over, and it's only the fake news that says that she is. That's realistic (and basically true).
The only thing that changed was Roseanne saying grace before meals. The Conners were not religious and there was an episode specifically about them *not* saying grace before meals.
If the political stuff stays at that level and doesn't dominate every episode, I'm fine with it.

As I said before, I was a big fan of Roseanne, so I watched it. I’m surprised at how good it was. For me, it definitely captured what was so great about the old show. And Laurie Metcalf is the best, obviously (Jackie has always been my favorite character).
I can’t stand Roseanne’s political beliefs, but to equate her with Chris Brown or Roman Polanski is a bit too far IMO. She hasn’t committed a crime, she just has ridiculous beliefs. And while she said some things about making America great again on the show, she also had that counter-balanced with liberal views. It’s not like the show is a half hour long Trump rally. If I only consumed media that featured people whose beliefs align perfectly with mine I would consume no media at all.

I loved this show back in the day (aside from the last season which was just beyond weird) and I enjoyed the first two episodes of the reboot. In regards to real Roseanne, I'm going to continue doing what I've been doing for the past twenty or so years: ignoring her.
