I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. All the political stuff in the first episode was simplistic and hacky but I thought the second episode was more like classic Roseanne. I was a little concerned when I heard there was a non-binary character in the show since real Roseanne has said some pretty transphobic stuff but they handled it pretty well. DJ could never really act but his part is pretty minor so far so it doesn’t bother me. I liked original Becky the first time around but her acting has gotten worst. Her character kind of sucks too.
The premiere got huge ratings. 18 million viewers. I do wonder how long they are going to be able to keep Roseanne reined in. She’s being liking some conspiracy theories about the Parkland shootings on Twitter lately and directly tweeting nasty stuff at one of the students although she later deleted it. ABC needs to take away her phone.

They can discuss politics on the show and have a non-binary character and maybe write it reasonable well. But I have a hard time forgetting that Roseanne the person will act those scenes and then turn around and tweet horrible shit about trans people and conspiracy theories about people she disagrees with politically. I mean, she's not just a conservative (that would be fine), she's tweeting stuff like "MKULTRA" in response to the March for Our Lives, suggesting those kids are out there not because they want a safer world (not at all unlike young protesters in the 1960s or even the suffragettes in the early 20th century who carried banners reading "The Young Are At the Gates" - young people are usually the ones who want to change the world), but because they've been brainwashed. And...I just can't line this lady's pockets.

If I want to watch people be racist I can turn on Fox News, I don't need a sitcom.

Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman apparently still haven't taken any acting classes since the show left the air, and Darlene's older child could just be a retread of Darlene and Roseanne's battles (or "the classics" as Dan calls it.) Lecy's lack of talent is particularly jarring in her scenes with Sarah Chalke. Sarah was always my favorite Becky, she's just so damn funny. I hope her character is around for a while. Emma Kenney (Darlene's daughter) is basically playing a toned-down version of her character on Shameless. She's an annoying brat on there too.

Roseanne returned to massive ratings , and interestingly enough, the highest ratings were in markets that were big Trump supporters during the election. New York wasn't in the top in the top 20 markets for ratings, Los Angeles wasn't in top 30. I ended up watching it this morning. I'm so conflicted about supporting this show. On one hand, Roseanne is awful and I hate the idea of contributing to Trump being normalized even further. On the other hand, Roseanne has always been awful and the revival did what the original version of the show did at its best. There were some genuinely touching and thoughtful moments in these first two episodes and I am not aware of any other sitcom that can do all that while still being funny. Part of me is congratulating myself for being adult enough to judge it fairly, while another part of me hates myself for having such low standards.

As if I didn't already have enough reasons, Trump personally called Roseanne yesterday to congratulate her on her ratings. I'm sure he sees it as a win for *him.*
Also, lovely he has time to call her, but seems to be lax when it comes to the families of soldiers killed.

For Roseanne's part, I think it's a ratings grab. The comedy landscape on television is overwhelmingly anti-trump (SNL, every late night host except Fallon) or apolitical. By framing the show as Trump/Trump-voter-friendly, she will get those eyeballs and ratings. I do believe she's a stupid bigot though. She's found a way to get herself back in the public spotlight and make tons of money from it. This is something that pisses me off so much about him.

I'm starting to understand the other side of the "Can we still consume/appreciate the art when the artist is an asshole?" debate, a la Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, etc.

I'm not watching Roseanne. I don't watch Woody Allen or Polanski projects. And I don't listen to R. Kelly, Chris Brown, or Michael Jackson. If one of their songs come on, I turn the station. I completely agree about the normalization of Trump and his inability to prioritize. Fuck the both of them.

I finally watched, and I really enjoyed it. I had to stop watching the Will & Grace reboot. In addition to being incredibly tedious, it was depressing to watch the characters act as if they were frozen in time and still in their early 30s. This felt like the Connor family had realistically progressed. And it was funny.
Things I noticed because I have watched way too many Roseanne reruns:
-Mark's school teacher was the same annoying school teacher Darlene had in Season 1!! The one who called Roseanne in for a parent-teacher conference because Darlene barks, but wanted to leave early to play squash. I was really tickled by that.
-I think Roseanne and Dan were sleeping on the wrong sides of the bed in the opening scene.
