1937195419762018With growing buzz, the re-re-re-remake of this oft told tale of Love and Hollywood returns in October with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga replacing Fredric March / Janet Gaynor, James Mason / Judy Garland, Kris Kristoferson / Barbra Streisand. Almost certainly the Golden Globes will be all over this. Will Oscar also return the favor, as it has with all 3 previous versions? And have you ever seen What Price Hollywood?, a similar story about True Love and Hollywood Dreams. Will it be " Evergreen" or will this be like " The Man That Got Away"?

It has been very very well received at all the festivals so far. I know Gaga will be front and center, but I really hope Bradley Cooper wins some stuff too.

I have to admit. I had no interest and then I saw the trailer and now I'm all in. Cooper and Gaga seem to have some great chemistry.
Here's my money. Let me in.

Sounds like it blanked at TIFF, I'll be curious to see if it keeps gaining momentum or fizzles by Oscar time. ItS definitely a crowd pleaser kind of film and that can make a film go either way, especially when it comes out earlier in the prestige-film season.
I find Gaga exhausting so I roll my eyes at every mention, but honestly: the trailer does look really good for this. Dammit.

I saw it tonight. It was entertaining, and I shed a tear or two at the end, but it was not as good as I hoped it would be, based on the trailer.
There were things that kept taking me out of the movie, making me think”hey, that doesn’t add up/make sense. And I kept thinking if I was a fan of Jackson’s (Cooper’s character) and I paid big bucks for one of his concerts, I don’t think I would have been as thrilled with an unknown doing encores as the movie audiences were with Gaga’s character.

I was intrigued at how quickly they dove in (HA! That's a direct reference to this film's lead song) with the Jackson/Ally relationship. Everything was just full-steam ahead and we got right into it without a lot of emptiness that seems to become the norm in films. I liked the film and that it all felt very organic and thought that Gaga's performance well played. I enjoyed seeing Bradley Cooper's range and laughed at the "you took my voice" line by Sam Elliot's character. Because yes, Bradley is a young Sam Elliot & Kris Kristofferson all rolled into one. SEMI-SPOILER-- I enjoyed the songs all except the shit pop vocals that got thrown into the mix (but was supposed to be shitty and over produced like what happens in this industry when good talent has crappy representation). I was pissed that Ally had this aesthetic to her writing and sound, and then was rallying against being this manufactured artist but didn't put up much of a fight to pretty much sacrificed her gifts to be a dime a dozen pop star. I cried a bit too and the true songs of the soundtrack were moving and touching. It wasn't the full on Oscar blockbuster that I was expecting, but I haven't seen a ton of films this year (so far) that I think fit the Oscar bill anyway. So this would be an okay choice for me.

I had the same reaction. There were a few things that kept taking me out; little plot holes or questions were I was like, are they going to come back to that? I went with a friend and she was severely disappointed and tried to leave twice, but she ended up staying (she had seen the Streisand version). I liked Gaga’s performance a lot; Cooper seemed a bit inauthentic to me.

Just saw it. I enjoyed it, Gaga and Bradley had great chemistry, but I think the first half is stronger than the second half. Their meeting was cute, but yes, they did dive into a relationship rather quickly.

I saw several interviews with Cooper and Gaga when they were in Toronto for TIFF and they could not stop gushing about each other. Not just for the movie, but how wonderful, and magnificent the other one was. If they're not an actual couple, I'd be stunned.
