I’m currently binge-watching Dexter. What the hell took me so long to watch? So good! Just about to start Season 3.

He was kind of chunky on The Office, wasn’t he? Maybe it’s his self loathing that’s driving it. He doesn’t like being heavy himself and fears he’ll become obese so lashes out at anyone heavy. Yeah, he lost a lot of weight a few years back and was pretty lean. He’s gained some back, I think. But I think he’s one of those “reformed fat people” who loses weight then has nothing but scorn for those who haven’t done it too. Like, “I did it, so why can’t you?” I worked with a lady like that. She lost around 80 lbs then had nothing but snide comments for those who were still heavy. She made her assistant’s life hell with comments like, “You look nice today...from the neck up.” I haven’t watched it because Gervais gives me pause due to stuff like this. Like, he’s not really an atheist so much as he’s got scorn for people with faith. Maybe, like the weight issue, it is because he once religious as a child.

I agree that it is a real self-loathing thing. I can recall some of his talk show appearances where he would allude to how awful he looked before he lost the weight. He was kind of chunky on The Office, wasn’t he? Maybe it’s his self loathing that’s driving it. He doesn’t like being heavy himself and fears he’ll become obese so lashes out at anyone heavy. I worked with a lady like that. She lost around 80 lbs then had nothing but snide comments for those who were still heavy. She made her assistant’s life hell with comments like, “You look nice today...from the neck up.” Well, that’s just a bitch right there.

Side comment: I haven’t seen it yet but I kind of like that there is a casual use of heroin, because I think that’s how most drugs are used - casually. Not everyone is a major junkie and strung out. There are so many people who appear “normal” and “together” but use/abuse drugs. As I said, I haven’t seen it so I don’t know if that’s how it’s presented. Normally, I'd agree. I mean, hi, I'm a pothead and god knows perfectly innocent/helpful cannabis is still reviled and looked down upon by many. However, heroin is a TOTALLY different story. There really is no such thing as casual use. One dose can and does kill. I think the light treatment of it on the show is legit disturbing. It fits with his character, but I still hate it and wish they would not have done it. It's irresponsible. I'm scared to death of his young, impressionable fans thinking it's not that big of a deal after all. Re his fatphobia, it's def rooted in self-loathing, no doubt. He's been beating that drum for years and years. It's getting old. (I still like the show, believe it or not!)

I do know people who use/have used heroin "casually" (& they're not shooting up but sniffing). Like I said, I haven't seen the show, so I don't know if it glamorizes it at all, and god knows I'm all pearl-clutchy about heroin/super hard drug use myself, but out in the world, people do use it that way. And you're right, one dose CAN kill but people don't think like that. I don't know if I'll bother watching the show because Gervais bugs me. I don't know why he's so worried about his weight when I can't get past his snaggle teeth. /shallowburn! (I'm kind of kidding but want to puncture his huge ego)

Oh, okay, wow. I stand corrected then. My limited experience has been in knowing someone who died from their addiction, plus some of my work has to do with the opioid crisis, so it never really occurred to me that there was a gray area, I guess. Yikes.

Who knew Carrie the movie, The Cranberries Zombie, a wee English fella and a nun raising a glass to a ceasefire could reduce me to tears, yes I’m raving about Derry Girls again.

I watched all of Season 1 of Derry Girls last Saturday—loved it. I teared up at the end of the last ep as well as the end of the episode where Granda Joe was looking at his late wife’s photo. Sister Michael is my favorite character! Sometimes the faces Erin made were so awkward that my face actually hurt just thinking about how it would feel to try to make that same expression. But I cannot wait for Season 2 to hit Netflix!

Is anyone watching Traitors on Netflix? Or The Good Fight? I continue to love Diane, but not sure about the Michael Sheen character.
