Hulu has just started streaming Moonlighting, which I was too young to catch when it aired in the 80s. It is so delightfully 80s, everything that's supposed to be nice and high end is so cheesy and pastel-colored.

I watched Saturday Night Live because I was curious to see how Bad Bunny was going to do as host and musical guest. I thought he did well; I couldn't imagine doing a show in a language I'm not fluent in and carry acting duties. However, did Lorne Michaels think we needed Mick Jagger twice (WHY talking about sex?), Lady Gaga (to introduce the musical segment(s), but not act?), and Pedro Pascal? I know anything can happen live, but it felt demeaning since his charm and wit made to show watchable. Also, can someone hire closed captioners who can translate Spanish, por favor?

Also, can someone hire closed captioners who can translate Spanish, por favor? Even if NBC hired captioners who could translate Spanish, the software they use wouldn't be able to switch between languages fast enough to keep up with a live show. Live captioning has limitations that post-production captioning does not. I think it should be possible for NBC to provide the Spanish translation postproduction for replays, though I'm not sure what that might entail and how long it would take.

There were segments in the show there they did use closed captioning for the translation. In the sketches where they didn't, I think it was intended for the comedy. For example, in the sketch where the kid was bringing home his Caucasian girlfriend to meet his mom and aunt, I think they wanted it to be heard like the girlfriend would - being able to tell emotion from the tone and a few select words, without knowing everything said.

Good point, zennifer. As someone who had a deaf maternal grandmother, her frustration in not being able to watch certain TV shows was understandable. I think there needs to be more technological advances in closed captioning to address this gap.

This is one area where AI will have a huge impact sooner rather than later.

I started bingeing The Vampire Diaries over the weekend following a Covid vaccination that made me feel crappy. I realize I'm fifteen years late to the party but OMG this show is amazing. It's awful, but awful in such a good way.
I wish I had watched it when it was airing, I would have been pretty much their exact target demographic in 2009 -- slightly emo Millenial who likes dark fantasy and will look the other way on terrible acting and storylines that don't make sense in exchange for hot guys who cry a lot.
