Watched “Russian Doll” on Netflix (ended up watching the whole thing, which wasn’t hard - episodes are 30 minutes). It was really good and Natasha Lyonne is excellent in it. I heard it's experimental, but not the subject matter. What's it about?

I heard it's experimental, but not the subject matter. What's it about? Basically, it’s a lot like Groundhog’s Day. Natasha plays a woman who starts out at a party for her 36th birthday and ends up dying that night. But after she dies, she wakes back up at the same birthday party. And it keeps happening over and over again. So it’s about her trying to figure out why she’s stuck in this loop and how to get out of it. It’s both funny and pretty moving because she has to examine her life to find clues that can help her out of the loop or find out why she’s there.

Didn't they make a movie a couple of years ago with the same plot? I'll check it out. You get bonus points for recommending "Sex Education".

I guess it might depend on whether or not you like Natasha Lyonne, as this is a very Natasha Lyonne character. If you like her in Orange is the New Black, you’ll like her here. Sex Education just got renewed for season two, which makes me very happy.

Russian Doll was great, I really, really liked it. It starts off pretty darkly funny and then just gets plain dark for a while but then gets pretty moving. It also sticks the landing. I loved the last episode. It absolutely does not need a second season but I wouldn't mind seeing more of these characters. I guess it might depend on whether or not you like Natasha Lyonne, as this is a very Natasha Lyonne character. If you like her in Orange is the New Black, you’ll like her here. I am not a big Natasha Lyonne fan, I prefer her in small doses but she was terrific. And the guy who played Alan was great too.

I just found out Endeavour season 6 hits ITV next Sunday, and PBS in June.

Do any of you watch Medici on Netflix? I watched the first season, well 2 years ago, with Richard Madden and Dustin Hoffman, and I didn't want to gouge my eyes out and enjoyed the costumes and some of the art. The second season came out a couple of week ago, and I watched it, and again it's entertaining, if wildly historically inaccurate, but the scenery porn is again beautiful.

Has anybody else watched Kidnapped In Plain Sight on Netflix? It. Is. Bonkers. It is also tragic that poor girl was failed so badly. My housemate and I watched it last weekend on the recommendation of a coworker (just as an aside, we will not be watching anything recommended by this doofus again after watching both this and “Hereditary” which also sucked ass.) Anyway, poor Jan. Her parents failed her badly. Having said this, we found ourselves groaning at how absolutely moronic these people were. When the alien thing came up, we both lost it and just started laughing hysterically. I know that we are New Yorkers so “jaded” is our middle name, but come the f*ck on! How sheltered were these people?! Her parents were both stupid and pliable (thanks to their rural LDS upbringing). The dad is gay and has been repressing it for so long that it made him an easy mark. The mom was also easy because she was craving attention from a man who is not gay. True Crime is my bag. I watch tv shows and movies, listen to podcasts and read books in the genre and honestly cannot recommend watching this one. These people were just absurd. I mean even the perp was bizarre! The milk and Kahlua concoction! WTF?!!

More checks in the “positive” column for Russian Doll - Lyonne made sure the writers were all female. She herself wrote and directed the final episode. I want to say all the directors were female too, but not 100% positive on that one (I know I saw at least one or two female names for director in the credits during my binge).
On Abducted in Plain Sight - that was completely insane. I don’t blame the kid so much for aliens stuff. She was young and sheltered and he had been drugging her, which probably made her brain foggy.
The parents made me insane though because they almost never put their child first. They spent all their time worrying about themselves.

Yeah, the alien thing was one of the things that bothered me the least. She was being drugged, isolated and the dude had months to brainwash her. Not to mention that she probably wanted to create an explanation that absolved the family friend that she liked. Add to it that after she was rescued the first time her parents didn't seem to want to deal with the situation at all so never really talked with her about it. The whole thing was just nuts though.
