I mean, I agree with you, but I think a lot of people might not see the crime. A lot of people might see this (unfortunately) as the rich people version of fibbing on a resume, or making a donation and getting the lecture hall in the business college named after you, as well as maybe a few other favors. Additionally, research shows that wealthy people are treated better by juries. And even in those cases, it's shitty...but donating money to a wing named after you or the like isn't illegal. I mean, you have legacy students that get in because of name recognition. But these people went out of their way to manipulate and lie about their children being on a crew team. Fake photos appearing as if they were in crew, add them to a roster and then never show up, continue to get the benefits, and then pay off employees of the college? Uh, that's the biggest form of fraud and it's illegal. It was a deliberate attempt to sabotage real students who could have had those spots and couldn't afford half a million dollars to do it. If someone fibs on a resume, it could go one of two ways. If they didn't check their references, they may get the job. But they went even further than that, they circumvented the process, lined people's pockets and financially blackmailed their way in. All with the intent to get away with it and the ring leader extorted money to give them what they wanted too. Regardless if research shows that wealthier people are treated better by juries, I'm really interested to see how that would play out if they knew the complete lack of disregard to regular, blue-collar families and how this could have easily happened to their own children.

I completely agree with you, and I really am watching this carefully--I hope for a well-argued prosecution, and a serious, measured outcome with actual punishment for the crime. I hope people on the jury will see it for what it is, an exploitation of privilege, and a crime, as well as an extreme disregard for the purported meritocracy. But I'm bitter and jaded, and while I hope this is a conviction with a soupcon of "screw them," who the hell knows--I can't shake that paraphrased Steinbeck line about Americans thinking of themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.
I think I'll set up a Google news alert.

Lori Loughlin wants a new plea deal with no jail time So just so I understand, she wants to throw a obscene amount of money...a bribe, if you will...to prevent jail time for a crime that she says she's not guilty of? A crime where the charges are for THROWING MONEY, A BRIBE, TO GET HER KIDS INTO COLLEGE? Sweet Jesus. These people NEVER FUCKING LEARN.

It's a shame OITNB is over, because this would've been such an awesome storyline. A prison consultant, FFS!

The schadenfreude, it is delicious! I want her to do some serious jail time. Vanity Fair had a great article this month about the non-celebrity parents, and in particular the whistle-blower. They all sound like wonderful people. /sarcasm The most ironic part is, the whistle-blower Morrie Tobin bribed his youngest daughter into Yale, but she was accepted by USC, apparently legitimately. Suck it, Aunt Becky!

From the article: My favorite part in bold. Shit, I KNOW IT'S YOU AUNT BECKY! Bwah! I hope she gets as much prison time as possible.

New news is coming out regarding her lawyers after the government accused the firm which previously represented the USC in unrelated cases, of having a conflict interest. I couldn't help but hear Chris Tucker yelling, "DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH?" heh But these crazy kids wanna keep their attorneys and have them represent them both. Another article from PEOPLE (which is NOT loading correctly for some reason) shared this about today's hearing in Boston: There is more of what transpired if you're willing to read the page in its current form. Either way, I think Boston is doing the best it can to let these people know that they need to get their shit together and they just aren't budging.

Just when you think they've hit the last brick wall, and reality has set in for them, they find a way to still try to work the system and get out of trouble. I am actively rooting for them to get multi-year prisons sentences. Not just for the initial scam, but for being such stubborn assholes about the entire thing. Just take your spanking blockheads.

Now taking bets on whether, when this blows up in their faces, they still decide to share a divorce attorney...
