I was about 3 songs into it before bed last night and I didn’t really like it? ? ? ? ? ? ? I will obviously spend more time with it today. But I was a little worried when I saw all of the imagery and lowercase fonts, that this the kind of album it would be. I am also a person who unabashedly loves Lover, 1989, and a lot of Reputation.
Will report back.

I’m about halfway through it and I love it. Exile, My Tears Ricochet, and Mirrorball are all great.

. I am also a person who unabashedly loves Lover, 1989, and a lot of Reputation. Those are my favorite 3 albums too, I’m so not an indie folk slow songs person. But! I do really like what I’ve heard so far, haven’t made it all the way through yet. I love that Taylor has built this really interesting body of work that is so different. The one thing that is the same is she’s such a gifted songwriter. Her lyrics are beautiful. I really think over the past few years she’s stepped into a new phase where she seems stable and happy and is creating the work she wants to make. And she owns her own work too! My opinion of her has changed a lot over time.

Love it! If you’re not into indie folk I get why you wouldn’t dig this album. Taylor leans all into the indie folk with this one! Except its mainstream because it is Taylor Swift.
“Exile”, “Hoax”, and “The Last Great American Dynasty” are the stand outs for me.

There was a Yahoo story about this song yesterday that mentioned a book about Rebekah Harkness that is sadly out of print, I really want to read it. I wonder if the renewed attention will revive the book, the only evidence I could find of it was a copy on Abebooks going for over $250!

Not a big fan overall, but the "Miss Americana" doc worked on me and a friend who works for the Grammys says she is a doll. IMHO she has grown up and her music reflects that - no more pointing fingers at exes. Kinda torn on the new music. I like some of the songs and want to be supportive of any artist who steps outside their lane to try to grow artistically. That said, if I want to listen to good indie folk/pop, I'm gonna reach for Aimee Mann or Fiona Apple first.

I have to admit, I find some of the Swifties’ theories about certain songs’ true meanings amusing. When Taylor announced the album on instagram she made it pretty clear that not all these songs are autobiographical. Its why the album is called Folklore. And yet many keep insisting on trying to make virtually every song autobiographical. For example, many believe “My Tears Ricochet” is about her battle with Big Machine over the song rights to her early stuff. “Her first single was ‘Teardrops On My Guitar’! Her tears are ricocheting! Secret code!” Never mind that her instagram post teased a song about a ghost observing her ex showing up at her funeral.
Now, the theory that “Cardigan”, “August”, and “Betty” detail a teenage love triangle from each of the players point of view? That I can get behind. Mostly because that ties into the folklore theme and that seems like a very Taylor Swift thing to do.

That said I bought folklore and a couple of Taylor's other recent albums. I liked a few songs of hers over the years, but I dig the darker stuff and like that she's been leaning in that direction. But is she the best indie folk/pop artist ever? Not by a long shot.

Joining the list of album inspiration theories is Rebekah Harkness, whose Rhode Island house is owned by Taylor.
