I saw him tonight in Raleigh. I think I posted earlier in this thread that I did think less of him for apparently cheating around on his wife with strippers and/or Olivia Munn and didn’t really want to go out of my way to support his new stuff as a result (despite him previously being my favorite comedian going back years).
But I’m a big giant hypocrite because a few months ago when I was visiting family in Raleigh and saw the local ad that he was coming here, I bought tickets on a wine-infused whim and made plans to come back here specifically for this. And damned if he wasn’t hilarious. Definitely better than “Kid Gorgeous” and I think probably on par with “The Comeback Kid.” (“The Top Part” is still my favorite, mostly for that Law & Order: mothership bit he did.) I had heard some of his rehab material from this set when he used variations of it on podcasts and talk shows these past few months, but he had so much more new stuff in here that is sharp, fresh and funny. His opening bit, totally unrelated to his personal life, which I won’t spoil because it comes better as a surprise (and I hope he retains it when the special airs), was A+ observational humor.
His opening act here was Seaton Smith, whom I thought was resoundingly unfunny (as a huge part of his act consisted of bizarrely finding humor in parents giving their kids beatings as a form of discipline). I honestly don’t know what collaborating with Dave Chappelle says about John. I am beyond tired of Chappelle dunking on trans people in some warped attempt to put them in their place in the oppression Olympics. But Dave is way more famous than John, and I don’t know the dynamics of Dave offering to open in a couple of markets, and how the weird, insular comedic community protects those on the inside.

I think that what collaborating with Dave Chapelle says about John is that John works well with other funny people, recognizes the benefit of working with others, and chooses to do so. It also says that Dave has a track record of working with other comedians and supporting their careers.
Trying to maintain a standard that acknowledging or working with a person can only be done if you endorse and agree with 100% of what that other person has done or said in life is a standard no one can live up to.

I'm amazed they have lasted this long. Their social media suggests that they have moved from LA to NYC.

Hasn't it been a little over a year? With the baby, I'm hoping this relationship stays stable, but I'm not suprised they're still together.
