Timothy West has gone. He was 90, and was married to Prunella Scales for 61 years. She's had vascular dementia for over 20 years. I'm so sad for her. I suspect most people will know Prunella Scales best as Sybil in Fawlty Towers. I really liked Timothy West. He played the King in Ever After, and seemed to be having a lot of fun with the role. Godspeed, sir.

Gerry Faust was a great guy. After Notre Dame, he came to Akron to be head coach of the U of A Zips. Just like Notre Dame, his record doesn’t tell the story. Akron U has had a crap football program my entire life. While Gerry didn’t succeed in changing that for any length of time, he was a great mentor for his players, and was well loved here for decades after he retired. My father, who was pretty high up at Goodyear, and went to Akron U, was a season ticket holder for football and basketball for more than 20 years. My dad’s sister worked in alumni relations, dealing with sports donors. I would often attend basketball games with my dad and grandpa during the 90s, and Gerry was at every game. He became friendly with my dad and would always saunter over from his seats one section over to say hi and catch up. Just a genuinely nice man. RIP, Gerry. (BTW, the son in law quoted in the Beacon Journal article above was a classmate of mine. We were pretty good friends in 3rd grade, and were still friendly all through high school, though we drifted apart when I chose music over sports.)

I highly recommend reading "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes". It's from the 90s so it's a bit out of date, but it describes in pretty gruesome detail the coaching strategies of Bela. His wife Martha was no peach either but he made her look downright gentle by comparison. The documentary "Athlete A" which is about the USAG Larry Nassar scandal also describes how Bela and Martha were essentially dictators (ironic considering their defection from the Eastern Block) over USA gymnastics for decades, and how they created a culture in which young athletes were too scared to speak up about abuse.
Bela certainly won a lot of medals for the United States (and Romania), but the cost was devastating for a lot of young girls.

I read Little Girls in Pretty Boxes when it came out and that pretty much ended my fascination with gymnastics because I realized how cruel the gymnastics pipeline was. And I don't even remember if it touched on sexual abuse. I do remember how the media loved to show pictures of Bela hugging the gymnasts after their routines and, in the book, Mary Lou Retton described the cruel/critical things he would whisper to them as they were hugging.
Until that point I loooooooved watching gymnastics.
