I forgot to factor in the sunken cost fallacy. It would be humiliating to realize you wasted over half your life on badly written science fiction.

I have never been able to wrap my head around how a parent could form a bond with their own flesh and blood for years and then just up and wash their hands of them while going through a divorce. This. He's missed out on knowing someone who seems like a great kid. Parenting is damn hard but it's also incredibly fulfilling when you can be proud of your kid and have their love. The original divorce/custody arrangement allowed him to have 10 days a month with Suri and probably extended holiday and summer visits on one condition: he couldn't talk about Scientology around her or expose her to any of it. It's so ingrained in his life and personality that he couldn't abide by that and wouldn't even try. I wonder what kind of audit info Scientology has on Tom to make him decide to stay. He's a true believer. He believes Katie is a Suppressive Person and Suri is a Potential Trouble Source. He had a chance to leave with Nicole Kidman, and they convinced him she was an SP. He was almost out and they pulled him back in. It's all in Going Clear by Lawrence Wright. Big celebrities have left the church and made it out and their careers and lives were not destroyed. Tom could leave but he won't because he's committed his life to this to the point where it's cost him two marriages and a child. He's in. If you look into his background, he was ripe for being recruited into a cult. He had a rough upbringing (abusive parent, poverty, learning disability) and this cult has treated him like a king since day 1 and "fixed" him. He ain't leaving.

Re: Why Brad Pitt has got more publicity for his failed relationships with his children than Tom Cruise. I think the exes play a big part as well. Jolie plays the press like a fiddle. I don't question the nastiness that went down on the plane, but Jolie does her part to keep it front and center. Holmes seems to be prioritizing her kid's wellbeing and simply doesn't give the press anything to work with.

I don't question the nastiness that went down on the plane, but Jolie does her part to keep it front and center. I think Angelina is constantly playing defense with Brad when it comes to the press. From day one, the severity of what happened was underplayed in the press "by sources close to Brad" and she was somehow the villain of the story. That continues to this day. Just days before Shiloh's bday there were all these press stories about how great his relationship was with her and that she was going to be moving in with him. And reality was she marched into court and dropped his last name. Brad has always been a master of the press and protecting his image.

He hasn't been seen in public with Suri since 2012, over twelve years ago. He's just another divorced scumbag who checked out on his child. But Brad is still in the fight and dropping gossip items left and right.

Tom is a true believer, but he also knows full well what happens to people who run. No reason it can’t be both.

He's also king of scientologists. They treat him like he's the Number 2 guy. Why would he leave? If losing family wasn't enough to break the spell, I don't think anything will be.

Watched Born on the Fourth of July last night. Leaving Netflix at the end of the month. The man really can act when he wants to. I would like him to try for Oscar again, but I don't think he will. He will most likely get an honorary one in his later years (if the stunts don't kill him) for all the money he has brought into Hollywood (and Scientology).

Tom was very good, but Daniel Day-Lewis won for My Left Foot. It was one of those years that someone was just edged out (and some unfortunate heavy Harvey Weinstein lobbying).
