Yeah, five parts were always absurd. But the first movie was entertaining if messy, then it totally crashed in the second one. And I'll always be bitter about Depp because he did his usual wacky hijinks while Farrell had IMO created one of the only genuinely frightening villains in the JKR universe. Next to Staunton's Umbridge. Rowling was never good at creating compelling antagonists. Graves/Grindelwald was menacing yet seemed so reasonable and persuasive! Exactly the type of guy who could get people to believe in his radical politics. While it never made sense that anyone followed Depp's character anywhere, he was so obviously unhinged.
Miller was good in the first part, but the character became as bothersome as everything else in the series as it dragged on. And yeah, that no one is really stepping in to stop them is pretty damning for the industry.
