Is there a precedent for this sort of thing? Title removing, I mean? Is it so that if she does go to jail the title doesn't go with her?

It's said that Juan Carlos and then later Felipe have been pleading with Cristina for years to voluntarily give up the Mallorca title. The Mallorcan people have been openly resentful about the fact that they're still using it. Now there's a new left government there and it was probably only a matter of time until the politicians tried to strip her of the title. So I'm guessing Felipe wanted to get ahead of that and prevent that sort of public drama added to the already existing one with Cristina's trial. It all reflects badly on the royal family, it played a large part in the abdication of his father. Felipe has very good approval ratings now and the crisis of the monarchy in Spain seems over for the moment, putting distance between the palace and his sister is probably a way to ensure it stays that way.
Cristina and her husband have also refused to take any kind of responsibility for their actions IMO. They refuse to give up any of their privileges. It's not pretty.

Nah. That's Cristina trying to save face. The palace immediately responded to her claims, saying that Felipe "informed" her that she was being stripped of her title. So the palace basically called her a liar. It's gotten pretty hardcore, I don't want to imagine the family gatherings. If there even will be any family gatherings.
