Considering the political environment I find all these awards unimportant. They are just as politically manipulated as all the other institutions. Basically, it is just a PR contest. So I'm so happy she used this platform to make this speech. The awards may be fake but the people who receive them are real human beings and some of them understand the true stakes in this very scary world we are in. So thank you, Meryl, for reminding me not to generalize and to remember regardless of our circumstances we are all in this together for the next 4 years...please just 4 years. Or less when he gets impeached. Please.

Her speech was very effective. Trump and his Twitter troops are going crazy with rage!

The Daily Mail and other sources are reminding us all that she supports (supported? IDK) Polanski.

Look you thin skinned, overripe turd: You can call Meryl Streep a lot of things, but "overrated" is not one of them!!! Your low self esteem is showing Donnie.

The way this is depressingly and predictably playing out in the media narrative partly shows why the state of US politics is the way it is. It's barely about what Streep said, the dominant story has become "Trump vs. Meryl! Scandal! Food fight!".
And yeah, don't make people into heroes. Any people. It never ends well. That doesn't detract from the substance of her speech. Personally, I've also always been bothered by her statements on Pauline Kael, though of course they're from some time ago as well.

Meryl says some stupid stuff sometimes and she says some good stuff sometimes. I can't think of anyone in Hollywood who agrees with me 100% and always says exactly what I want them to say.
Most of the time I think Meryl uses her powers for good, and I'll cheer her on when she does so.

I'm starting to think that being called "overrated" on the Drumpster Fire's Twitter feed will soon be the same point of pride as being on the Nixon Enemies List was in my youth.

Just when I couldn't love her anymore, she gave one hell of a speech when accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at last night's Golden Globes. You could tell that the celebs that she mentioned by name in her speech that she hadn't worked with before were awe-struck, like "Holy shit! She knows who I am and she researched me!" while Viola Davis and Amy Adams were like "I would donate both of my kidneys to her if I had to". Ryan Gosling was so cute, he was all like "Oh my God! Meryl Streep knows who I am!"

Dev Patel also looked super excited when she mentioned him :-) it was a great speech from beginning to end, and as I mentioned in the Globes thread, she made me cry.
