Dev Patel also looked super excited when she mentioned him :-) it was a great speech from beginning to end, and as I mentioned in the Globes thread, she made me cry. I know this isn't his thread, but how damn cute was Dev Patel with his little co-star?

And he carries a significant amount of Lion by himself, they don't transition to Dev Patel until about 30-35 minutes in.

Someone on my Facebook feed was bitching about how celebrities like Meryl should stay out of politics and stick to entertainment. I said, "Maybe you're right. You know who's an even better example of a celebrity who should stay out of politics? Donald Trump." I love Meryl. Normally I get sorta eye-rolly about celebs being political, but these are dark times and I think it's almost negligent for everyone to not speak up if they have the platform to do so.

Love Meryl, but I agree that celebrities, including our Tweeter-in-Chief, should stick to celebritying.

The funny thing is, her speech really wasn't all that political, if her detractors were paying attention (they weren't). Obviously it was directed at an, *air quotes,* "politician" but the words were simply about recognizing that we're all from different backgrounds and that those different and less fortunate than us deserve civility and empathy. You don't have to belong to a specific political party or be in politics to endorse that kind of message or to even say that in a public, non-political forum.

I don't even like Meryl as an actress that much--I get that she's good, but she seems to be the only working American actress over 55 these days, and I always see her in all her roles. Not to detract, and I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but there it is. Anyway, her speech was fine--get 'em, tiger!

Oh man I love Meryl, her early work is so insanely good! chonies, if you haven't seen Kramer vs. Kramer or Sophies Choice or The Deer Hunter or Out of Africa or Silkwood (or or or...) you gotta sit down and watch them sometime, it may change your opinion. Sophie's Choice if nothing else, she earned the title of Greatest Actress of our Time with that role. And I agree - her speech was wonderful. I love that she took the opportunity to speak for empathy and acceptance of others.

I've seen them! I like her earlier stuff better, but generally when I watch her I think, "wow, the writing was pretty good." And I don't think she's overrated, especially, but there isn't anything about her that makes me want to run out and buy a movie ticket.
I know it makes a vulgar barbarian, but I think it comes down to the Ethiopian (or Burmese or Indonesian, etc.) food question--either you like it or you don't, and all the down-menu sampling in the world won't change anyone's mind, especially because it becomes a weird positional thing.

Haha - that reminds me of that "Oh that Meryl Streep, she's such a phony baloney" quote from Seinfeld.
