I like Jon but not as an Oscar host. I even liked Ellen better than him. And I also thought that Steve Martin did a fantastic job when he hosted the show. Ah well.

They're letting him back?! I thought he was hilarious as an Oscar host, but I thought some of his ad-libs pissed people off. Of course now I can't remember what they were.

I thought he was funny as a host (hey, he threw in some Scientology jokes - that will always win points with me), but it did seem like a lot of the audience either didn't get some of his jokes or were kind of uptight/pissy about them. Some people in the audience really liked him though - I remember Jake Gyllenhaal (is that spelled right?) running up on stage right after the show ended to shake his hand. But I do wonder if the timing here is the reason why they picked Jon and didn't bring Ellen back. 2008 is an election year, and Jon and The Daily Show are always at the top of their game during election years. I wonder if the Oscars producers are trying to tap into that energy.

Excellent! I enjoyed his stint and he seemed to enjoy doing it that year. There is so little to get enthused about when this shindig rolls around, the host is the only surprise anymore.

I remember watching the post show that year, and every single celebrity they interviewed said Jon was the highlight of the show for them. Including Lindsay Lohan.
I love Jon and I'm excited they're letting him host again. I'm kind of surprised he wants the gig, but I'm still stoked.

I remember watching the post show that year, and every single celebrity they interviewed said Jon was the highlight of the show for them. Including Lindsay Lohan. That was really weird, because it didn't seem like the audience liked Stewart at all during the show. I personally loved Stewart. His bit with Halle Berry and George Clooney was hysterical. And I loved his montage of gay cowboy moments in film. What I hated the most was all of the smug articles from film critics stating Jon bombed. I thought he really got unfairly raked over the coals in the media for his performance.

Yeah, I don't know what was wrong with the audience. Some of the celebs interviewed had been watching the show on TV at a separate party, so they may have been howling with laughter there, even if the producers, sound editors, and seat-fillers in the audience weren't. Anyway, I liked that Jon didn't kiss ass and didn't shy away from making fun of the "big names." Maybe that had made the audience uncomfortable, or maybe they were just too dumb to get the jokes.

I got the impression that as a "lowly" tv actor, he was considered beneath them, and they didn't appreciate him making fun of them. That audience was definitely not into his shtick.
Good luck to Jon this year. Hopefully his jokes won't be greeted with crickets chirping.

What I did like about him was that he pointed out the ridiculousness of the bloody montages, that was pretty funny. I hate it when they cut off winners after 45 seconds but have hours of that show for stupid montages. Some are nice, but I don't think we need more than, say, three of them.

On the View today, Whoopi Goldberg, who has the dual perspective of having been both a host and an Oscar winner, said that it was a tough gig because the audience is a bundle of nerves, just waiting to find out if they won.
I like Jon too. I met him in passing, in college, and recognized him years later when he started showing up on television, because even as a scrawny freshman, he was quite a personality.
