It sounds corny, but Jon Stewart took over TDS when I was just 21. He's definitely been a huge force in shaping my political beliefs. I don't always agree with him, but when I need to hear the voice of sanity he's always there. I am gutted he's leaving.

I feel like he's been tired for a while. (In his episode of Comedians Getting Coffee In Cars or whatever it's called with Seinfeld, he expressed that he was kind of ready to go). I felt like the Colbert Report was running rings around TDS to the point that I stopped watching TDS until John Oliver stepped in as host. I haven't returned to TDS since. I love Jon - he's a genius, I generally agree with his politics and his no-bullshit style with opposing forces but it is definitely time for him to move on. This election year is going to be difficult and horrible and as I said before, if I was him, I wouldn't have any fun covering it, even satirically.

This really, really sucks.
I have to say I'm not 100% surprised (although reading the news was definitely a "whoa" moment). There have been times during the last couple of years when TDS has been... I don't want to say "phoning it in" because it's never gotten to that level, but lacking some fire? Or maybe it's just me who reached the point where I got burned out on political stupid and couldn't keep watching. I don't know. Forgive my rambling.
I will say, the way TDS roasted Alberto Gonzales' ass over the "I can't remember, I have searched my memory" hearings deserved all the awards, ever.

It's got to be a depressing job, covering bozo politicians and incompetent journalists, even though he's making jokes about it.
I stopped watching too because I think the passion had just gone out of it. Maybe he was idealistic and thought he could help change things by satirizing it, but in the last 16 years things have only gotten worse on the political and journalism front. I can't blame him for moving on to other projects.

I haven't really watched since John Oliver stepped in -- got out of the habit and haven't gotten back in.
But their election coverage was must see TV for me, so I know I would have started watching again just for that.
Losing Stewart and Colbert within the same year is a real gut punch.

I had a friend whose BFF wrote for TDS back in 2008-2009. He said Jon was so disappointed in John McCain's campaign, that it changed the way he approached the job- he became really disillusioned. I definitely noticed a difference at the time, and focused on TCR instead.
For me Jon did phone it in for a couple of years, but I feel that John Oliver getting his own show coupled with Stephen Colbert's brilliance helped push Jon to do great work this past year. In particular, I feel like the show has been incredibly solid the last couple of months, and it's some of his best work.
I will miss his no BS attitude w/ politicians, and calling out Fox News on a daily basis. We need someone like that....

Oh that really sucks. So in addition to foisting Sarah Palin upon the nation, that's something else I can resent McCain for.

I agree that Jon had been pretty great lately. He's still able to come up with beautiful/brilliant rants on the regular. Recently someone asked him what he thought of Obama and he said that he gets the impression that Obama feels like he's surrounded by freaking idiots (on both sides of the aisle). I suspect Jon also believes they are all freaking idiots too, and he's just exhausted from having to live in their bullshit.
I can see why he was so disappointed in McCain. He truly was a maverick once upon a time and one of the few Republicans who would play with Jon. Then he sold out to the base and pandered to the Tea Party to get the nomination. And worst of all, he unleashed Sarah Palin onto the world, and she proceeded to tap into the ugliest part of their base while he wasn't paying attention.
But I also think that he really enjoyed the challenge directing a movie provided. He's probably ready for something new.

John has always fawned over McCain and treated Obama with some pretty ugly disdain. I think he was bitter McCain didn't win and he had a hard time squaring the reality of McCain with the idealized version of McCain he and other liberal/liberatarians have of McCain.
