That Stewart humor is lost on the humorless. He (Andy) really seemed to like Jon and the Daily show, but says something along the line that the audience doesn't know how to be serious and relevant, but find the humor in a situation.
See all the self congratulatory, "We care about the world! We make a difference!"
I guess when you are sitting there in $20,000 gowns, and $500,000 worth of earrings, after being paid $20,000,000 to do your "job"...... like say, making a film about poverty in Africa or women working as miners, you don't want anyone pointing that little paradox.
Jon is also not a Hollywood insider. As he said, he was fourth male lead in Death of Snoopy.
For all that, I think they got him. It took a few moments for the audience to find it's rhythm, but he did fine.
When you have a house full of men and women in constricting clothes, waiting to see if they won the biggest award of their life, and for the others, if their movie gets an Oscar, it generates tens of millions more dollars and more job opportunities, you're not looking at a funny haha crowd.

Is he taking slams? I've only heard good things from the celebs at the after parties and the morning after news shows. I thought he did a very dignified job and let the show take center stage, as it should. He's taking some slams. Tom Shales absolutely skewered him.

I don't read stuff like that, as I really do hate the business's parasite called "critics" and try to ignore them as much as possible. So my question is, did these same tools slam the other Oscar hosts over the years?

I thought the opening was hilarious. I loved the 'political' ads regarding the best actress nominees. He did a great job.

I thought he did a great job too. Some of the best moments for me were when they panned to the audience. I've never seen so many shocked faces. It looked like all of them were on the edge of their seats afraid of what he might say or do next.

Cintra Wilson skewered him as well, in her post-show column.
Seriously, what do these people want? The bland, mind-numbingness of Billy Crystal?
It started out shaky, for sure, but I think once Jon accepted the uneasiness and decided to go all out (for him, at least) anyway, it picked up tremendously. The political campaign ads were hysterical and Jon's ad libs were nothing short of brilliant - the Russell Crowe one, the Scorcese/Three Six Mafia, even a smaller one like wearing jeans. I don't recall any other host being able to ad lib and work with the ceremony so well and cleverly. "We have no more clips - we have run out clips for montages."
I feel like these critics are mistaking a semi-dull ceremony with a bad host. Not the same thing and Jon was the only source of life at times.
Slate's people liked him and Ebert/Roeper gave him high praise. I'll be interested to see what EW thinks.

Seriously, what do these people want? The bland, mind-numbingness of Billy Crystal? Gah. A couple of people at the viewing party I attended pulled out the "We miss Billy Crystal" whine again last night. I don't understand. I enjoyed every other host over the past 10 years MORE than Billy Crystal. Yes--that includes David Letterman (who I actually enjoyed). I love Jon.

I thought he was great. Thought the ad-libs worked and the campaigning bits were a riot. It's not his fault the ceremony itself had no surprises and the winners' speeches were meh.

I loved the one "campaign" that had "Paid for by his mom" at the bottom. LOL
