I thought he did a great job. Smart and funny as usual. The audience needs to go buy a sense of humor.

I thought Jon did well -- I laughed pretty consistently throughout the opening. It didn't blow my mind, but then, I can't really remember the last Oscar host who did. He meshed the showbizzy stuff with his own sense of humor, which I was pleasantly surprised he pulled off.

Personally, I think that the audience totally got his jokes and seemed pretty expressive and humored by him.
The tone of the night seemed pretty tame -- compared to last years "Chris Rock Show". What do you expect from a three hour long sitdown event? I ADORED the opening intro, with Jon in bed with George Clooney. Swoon-worthy!
And I have to agree with Jon, were there enough montages? Good gravy!

If anything, I think that much of the Academy's crowd watches ET and Insider instead of The Daily Show--let's all give thanks that Mary Hart and Pat O'Brien haven't been asked to host the show.
The problem is that Gil Cates seems to have trouble finding someone to host who can entertain this incredibly insular theater audience while simultaneously keeping the television viewers amused and engaged. Hope and Carson were masters at it, and I think Jon did very well last night. He didn't bomb, he seemed to be fairly well-received by the audience, and the critics I've read so far seem to have prepared their Jon-bashing in advance. I say bring him back next year, and from now on whenever Steve Martin turns them down.

. Has this writer never seen Joaquin before? He's an intense guy -- he doesn't easily crack a smile. Sigh.
Andy's a big old jackass, isn't he? So, what's he saying? Stewart wasn't funny—or that Stewart's humor was lost on the humorless? Frankly, I don't give a poop if the people in the audience aren't laughing—I care that **I** am laughing because in my world, the show is produced to entertain me and the millions of others watching it. The people in the audience just want the show over with, want to know if they won or lost and want to move on to the party so they can get some free food and booze. It's not like I'm sitting at home waiting to take my queue from Heath Ledger to find a joke funny before I decide to laugh along. Oh, Jack Nicholson isn't laughing at the Martin Scorcese joke? Then neither shall I! (I actually even enjoyed Letterman as a host—and laughed a lot when he did the Uma/Oprah thing BECAUSE Oprah wasn't laughing at all.) Short of digging up Johnny Carson or Bob Hope from the grave and have either one hosting the show every year, I think the Academy was served well by Jon Stewart. If anything, "Andy" should blame the producers for perpetuating the boring every year.

I think Steve Martin's the best host ever. I can't stand Billy Crystal. I liked Chris Rock and David Letterman. Jon Stewart did really well. I enjoyed it and he's my second favorite after Steve Martin.
I think the writer was right though. His opening jokes fell flat for that audience, although we were laughing here. I can understand why, though. The audience was full of self-involved people who don't appear to have the ability to laugh at themselves.
I thought he did great. I hope he or Steve Martin comes back next year. ANYTHING but Billy Crystal.

I think the guy on msnbc is blaming the audience for their lack of humour. Anyway, I thought Jon was good, had very good subtle and not so subtle jokes in the opening (loved Cheney/Bjork joke and "You're taking money away from these people!!!!There are women here who can barely afford to cover up their breasts!" but I felt like he was a little uncomfortable doing it, always guarded, always watching what he'd say. I thought the beginning was very good but the in-between not so much. I blame it on the Oscars for being so damn uptight because Jon cannot be a let down.
Loved how he toook a swipe at lobbying for a certain actor/actress to win (Reese), reminded the Academy that Scorsese is waaaay overdue with that Scorsese 0 3 6 Mafia 1 joke( or was that subtle that Oscars don't mean that much really?) and of course the Scienos!!!!
Other than that the show was a big bore, with even more boring acceptance speeches. Liked the intro with Jon and Halle and George, and the piece with Tom Hanks!
Question: Has Conan ever hosted the show?If not than he should next year.

I have to give Jon Stewart credit - I was rolling my eyes and dissapointed when he was named as host, and I was pleasently surprised at how well he did. I don't think he was the best host ever, but I think that some of the slams he's taking today are VERY undeserved. He was very funny. He made jokes about the people in the audience, but they weren't mean jokes. Best of all, he altered his act for the audience. He didn't try to make it The Daily Show on the Oscar stage. And I LOVED the opening taped bit. He knew the kind of show he was doing, and he worked around that. I would not be dissapointed if he were brought back to host again.

Is he taking slams? I've only heard good things from the celebs at the after parties and the morning after news shows.
I thought he did a very dignified job and let the show take center stage, as it should.
