The only modestly-budgeted movie with an on-set death I can think of that did well with critics and was a minor box-office hit would be The Crow*, so the odds of Rust just breaking even are against it. I’m still angry that Halyna Hutchins died on a movie than may not be good nor watchable, not to mention how an "in memory of" credit card would be like pouring salt into the wound.
*Actor Michael Massee was so guilt-ridden about accidentally shooting and killing Brandon Lee that he took a year-long sabbatical from acting, could never watch the movie, and had nightmares about it a decade later. Alec Baldwin, on the other hand, seems to be blasé and inconvenienced by Halyna‘s death, as if he couldn’t be a bigger asshole.

An indie western was already going to be a tough sell at the box office. I guess it's Hollywood and strange things happen, but once the film is finished they will need to find a distributor. How likely is that to happen? Will it get screenings at big film festivals with the dark cloud hanging over it? Unlikely.

The LA Times compared this movie to those "Geezer Teaser" movies that pay Al Pacino or Bruce Willis $6 million to make extended cameos in shlock action movies that are largely going to be viewed overseas. It's not exactly the same, but Alec is definitely the main draw in what otherwise appears to be a low-budget shoot-em-up. Are they still going to be paying the non-union crew next to nothing, force them to do two jobs at a time, and make them commute to the set over an hour each way instead of providing them with lodging?
And when is law enforcement going to tell us how a live bullet got into the gun? It appears that Alec (accidentally) pulled the trigger on the gun whether he admits it or not, but I still think there are others more culpable than him.

Not just a tough sell at the box office, but a tough sell, period. I cringe when I think of the possible press tour, or Baldwin on the late night chat shows, baring his pain. Or was "no interviews" part of the settlement?

Baldwin decided to post a picture of Halyna Hutchins on his Instagram today. It was not well-received, given that he killed her, accident or not, one year ago today. link

Yikes. Maybe if he wrote something other than "One year ago today..." and just left it at that, it would have been a little better. Like honoring her or expressing sadness or grief of her loss? SOMETHING?!? What a fool.

Alec isn't my favorite person. We all know he and his wife are incredibly problematic. I do not believe for one instant that he intended to kill Halyna.
It must be incredibly traumatic to have been the accidental cause of a friend or co-workers death. None of us would handle it well. I wish people would show him just a little grace. Whether or not anyone thinks he deserves it is not for us to judge, as Tolkein wrote, "Even the very wise cannot see all ends".
He is honoring Halyna in word. We might find his methods tacky, but let's not call him out for his grief. We all know what one year ago was.
What more can he say? That he's sorry. Not good enough. What can he do? Give all his money to Halyna's family? It wouldn't bring her back? Give up his way of life? So his children should be punished for his carelessness.
I suppose it would be nice if he took his wife and children off to live a quiet life in Montana or Wyoming, but again that doesn't bring back Halyna.
I just think a modicum of kindness just the small drop he deserves needs to be considered. Yeah, it only goes so far, but still we are adults who know better.

I can definitely feel sympathy for Alec Baldwin, or anyone else in this particular type of situation. I also believe, however, that Alec would probably be shown more grace from people had he extended such grace to others over the past 25+ years.

My grandmother used to tell me to always be kind--"We teach people how to treat us--treat them with kindness, and they are far more likely to reciprocate with kindness..."
