I think their original look and sound was driven by Robin Macy, who was the founder. After she left, and especially after Natalie came on board, things changed a lot.

It still blows my mind the way all that went down. And that was over GWB, can you imagine if the same had happened in the current climate? They probably would have had to go into witness protection. Seriously. Those were insane times (I remember having a HUGE fight with my dad over the Iraq invasion), but compared to today it's like kindergarten. I like the lyrics, but yeah, not feeling the song as a whole, if that makes sense.

I saw them years (decades!) ago at the Texas State Fair before Maine joined them. Not on purpose, mind you, they were performing on a smaller side stage during the day so it was kinda random chance. I remembered thinking it was a great band name, they had really nice presence, put on a good show, but their music was way too twangy and country for me. So when they popped up a few years later with Maine I was kinda surprised and thrilled to see the changes. They were so much more accessible to someone like me who isn't a hardcore country music fan. Maine really did take them to a whole other level. Her father was a big time country producer and I think he's the one that put them together.

Her dad and uncles are the Maines Brothers Band and and have had a steady music career in Texas. I moved to Lubbock, Natalie's hometown, not long before the GWB thing happened. It's one of the most conservative areas of the country and the city turned on her viciously. I remember seeing people driving around town who'd taken the trouble to write nasty stuff about her on their car windows. The radio stations burned their CDs. It was one of many moments I lived there when I thought to myself "what the hell have I done by moving here??" If you have ever heard the Chicks' song "Lubbock or Leave It" you have an excellent picture of what it is like to live there but never truly fit in.
A few years ago, Natalie was inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame. One of my friends went to the induction ceremony, which was held at Lubbock High School. He said it was a great evening and all wounds seemed to be healed. Natalie was very appreciative and touched by the acknowledgement. Mr. Ladybug went to elementary school and jr. high with her and remembers her as having a big personality. He says he doesn't remember her going to LHS, which is where he went. I'll have to dig out his old yearbooks and see if I can find her.

I heard they changed owners since I worked at the one in OKC but they had great food!

The 50 Yard Line closed last year. Mr. Ladybug was really upset because that was the "nice restaurant" of his childhood. I liked their rolls and blueberry muffins.

It appears they may have changed their name to just “The Chicks” and did so in conjunction with the release of this song/video: March MarchI thought “Dixie” may get a bit of a pass since it’s not quite as strongly tied to slavery as something like “Antebellum” and hell, I was willing to give them a pass after they got “canceled” and their careers ruined for daring to criticize Bush. But this appears to be where they are moving.
