Not a fan of him personally for many of the reasons stated above, also his role in supporting Jenny McCarthy and her spreading anti-vax misinformation. But he's a great actor who's in one of my favorite films ever, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and it sucks that he's going out on Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I guess it makes sense that his lagging career makes him just want to throw in the towel.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind He was so good in that. The Truman Show, as well.

I found him overrated as an actor; I guess his comedic style just isn’t my cup of tea at all.I recall that in the Eternal Sunshine poster I could not get over how much he looked like the Nate from 6 Feet Under actor. I have been impressed by his “sickened by standing ovation for Smith comments”. That for me was also the most disturbing part of the whole thing since it was an almost en-masse decision to do the Wrong Thing in contrast to when it was just one individual. I think some of this decision or at least the timing has to do with this stupid backlash bringing up shit from 20 years ago in retaliation for him speaking up over Will Smith. Which is sad. I won’t miss him as an actor personally, but I do like the guts to go against the crowd and stick your head above the parapet a’la JK Rowling in any situation, and I feel sad that, increasingly, the kind of backlash those gutsy individuals receive means that everyone will be too scared to voice their own opinions anymore. His comedy work is obviously more famous, but I thought he was extremely talented in the more dramatic moments. He had that sad clown thing that Robin Williams had, when they tuned into the emotional side, it was that much more heartbreaking.. If he was going to retire, I'd say BEFORE Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the time, lol, but maybe it was one last payday, which I can't fault him for.

I can't stand Jim Carrey and I didn't care for Robin Williams either. I was so annoyed by their obnoxious and terribly unfunny mugging that I could not overlook it when they tried to do serious roles. One of Carrey's retirement quotes: "...and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists - I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough." Congratulations to you, a-hole. Maybe Anthony Hopkins and all of those other actors who continue working into old age do so because they love acting, and not because they have deficient egos that need to be fed by fame and success?

I like Carrey as an actor and never paid attention to his personal life. I don't see anything wrong with his reasons for retiring. It seems that he's just ready to move on. He's had a long and enviable career (some worthy films, some turkeys), and at this point, as he says, he's done enough. It just sounds like he is satisfied with his career and now is the time to bow out. He wasn't disparaging any specific celebrities.

It would not surprise me at all if his retirement announcement is not a calculated move to get work. As others have said, I think it's possible that he's "retiring" due to the lack of any good offers coming his way. By putting it out there framing it as a retirement, I could see the hope being that people would remember his better work, be sparked with memories of roles like Eternal Sunshine and Truman, and suddenly he'd be in the conversation for new roles. It would not surprise me at all, if he were offered work like that again, if he suddenly came out of retirement.

He made sure to say that he is "probably" going to retire and that he's "mostly ready" and added the caveat that he wouldn't retire if a really good offer came his way.
